blogwatch: where we’ve been clicking this week

Before and After, part one: Half the comments say “Wow!” and you’ll see why when you admire our own Leah H’s incredibly inspiring make-over at More Ways to Waste Time. They turned an unfinished attic into a little girl’s (and some adults’!) dream bedroom.
Before and After, part two: Design*Sponge shares before-and-after wallpaper photos featuring the home of Simply Lovely’s Joslyn.
Whorange, inspired by this trend post at Design*Sponge, thinks polar bears are the new owls. How’d we miss that owls replaced rabbits and fish, which of course were the new deer?
And since branches were the new antlers (or maybe antlers were the new branches?) we have to link to swissmiss for this Branch Bookshelf.
Decor8 tells us that you can now print your own fabric designs at Spoonflower! That is cool news.
“Welcome to my mortgage hell” at Glamour. Cautionary tale of bad lending practices — or of women and real estate?
For those who’d rather spend money on travel, Not Martha has some flight accessories that we want now, particularly the sleep mask.
What do you think of the Grow Bag, a pillow for growing plants?
Well, that’s it for us. We’re off to make more summer-style cocktails, these courtesy of The Kitchn.

Thank you for the link to the Glamour article! This, however, only pointed to a small slice of the problem. Women owning homes w/o husbands isn’t the problem. The problem is 1. greedy, unethical lenders and 2. greedy, foolish buyers. Even in the article, one of the women was married, not single.
I bought a house on my own, AND I worked for a mortgage company, so I know both sides. When people (men or women) think they deserve something above their means, they get themselves into trouble. This happens all the time. It was severly compounded by financial analysts and lenders failing to see that an extremely dangerous lending tool could not be opened up to the general public and thrown around like candy without causing serious harm to the borrowers and the economy. Believe me, the lying that went on by the borrowers and brokers was large-scale; lenders didn’t do their due diligence in many cases.
But ultimately it is each individual’s responsibility to know their circumstances and borrow responsibly. I do not believe the government should bail out the borrowers or the lenders; neither society as a whole nor individuals learn from being shielded from the consequences of their bad actions.

Under the Design Sponge link, the writer said that she wallpapered her bathoom with wrapping paper. I would love to know how you go about doing that. I assume you put some sort of a gloss on top to protect the paper from the damp environment? And how do you make it stick? Is there a particular glue? This would be a great solution to expensive wall paper that is not as easy to afford as say 5 or 6 rolls of wrapping paper. - Thanks!

so true, polar bears are the new deer, not the new owls. i missed the rabbits, though. i thought mushrooms original replaced the owls, which were, in turn, replaced by the deer.

Thanks, as always, for the linkage!
I think hippos are the new owls, which were the new deer, which were the new birds … I guess I completely missed fish and bunnies, tho.

Ha! I posted about the polar bears too. But mostly because I’m obsessed with polar bears. I hope I’m about to encounter my “design season” version of bliss.
I suspect hedgehogs will be the new polar bears, if the vote at Berkley Illustration is any sort of indicator.
