five things we learned last week

Bright ideas we gathered from your comments.

1. Killing fleas, whether done so with herbs or medicines, is no laughing matter. Brandi, a veterinarian from Seattle wrote in and said: “If you are worried about chemicals on the pet’s coat use an oral medication like program. These products also help reduce environmental contamination with flea eggs and larvae thus producing a flea-free home and yard. The flea products out there now are amazing and have really helped reduce the number of pets and humans that are literally sick of fleas.” See our post from the book Eco Dog on making your own natural flea powder here.

2. Decorating with Paint By Numbers may be cliched to some, but most of us still have a soft spot for them. Amanda in Austin writes: I find a lot of these PbNs in antique stores but they’re usually marked way up. Makes me just want to buy a set and paint my own!” Click here to see the inspiration we found in Country Living magazine.

3. You seem to be as fascinated by beekeeping as we are! Paige asks: “Can Chad be convinced to set up his own beekeeping blog? Because I am an aspiring beekeeper with unconvinced husband and kids, and I would love more detail on these adventures!” Well, we’re not sure Chad has time for a beekeeping blog, but we did create a new beekeeping category. You’ll find all of our buzzzy adventures there, with more on the way!

4. You are grill masters. After Angela M. asked for tips, a bunch of you wrote in with smart advice, including Ellobie, who says: “For grilling vegs: throw an inexpensive cooling rack(s) perpendicular to the grill bars. This turns the cooking surface into a grid and helps prevent the vegs from taking flying leaps into the flames. A few small racks allow you to divvy up the grill area as needed and you’ll get much better results than those trays designed (poorly) for the purpose.” Click here to add your own smart grilling tips.

5. You can make pretty cool house numbers from copper piping. Tracy showed us how with this Flickr show. “Easy and cheap!” She says. See more house number ideas
