did you go to the new ikea in brooklyn?

We have yet to make it to the brand new Ikea store that just opened in Red Hook, Brooklyn. (The one in Paramus, NJ is soooo much closer to us on the UWS). But we’d love to hear from any readers who have made the journey — how is the store? Is it hard to get to via public transport? Is there anything about it that makes it distinctly Brooklyn? We found some great photos on Flickr, including the one above, but want some firsthand reporting. Spill it!

I’m just dying to make my way out to Red Hook to check things out! So happy that we now have an IKEA a bit closer to home.

I totally went the day after it opened; couldn’t resist! We got there around 7:30 pm and had no trouble parking. There didn’t seem to be too much street traffic craziness either. The weirdest thing for me, having spent a ton of time at the Ikea in Elizabeth, was the pick-up and checkout area. It’s laid out just like the Elizabeth store and I kept thinking that I was going to walk out the door and be in NJ. It’s weird to think of Ikea as a place like Home Depot or Lowes — we can just head there anytime for something small.

I had been super excited about it but then when I got there I was like: Oh, of course, it’s Ikea. Not so different from other Ikeas. There was one special Brooklyn thing, though: The windows inside were really nice. We were there as the sun set and there was this funny moment with a big group of people huddled next to the window in a model bedroom, looking out at the waterfront.

I just wish one would open in Denver… but I’m told by people that will never happen, because it would involve trucking the items into the middle of the nation, which would add too much to the cost.

DJ – we have an IKEA in Cincinnati and we’re pretty far inland. I would be willing to bet a lot of money that Denver would eventually get an IKEA.

I heard that the Red Hook store has its own buses to make up for the lack of public transit.

DJ – I’m with you on the Denver IKEA – but with locations in Minneapolis and Utah; I don’t think the trucking is the issue. I was told by a IKEA manager in Utah that we have to have a larger metro area to draw from.
I don’t know if i believe that either.

i used to live in Prague in the Czech Republic and when i would enter ikea it was like being at home, it was laid out in a similar way to the one in Philly (my home town) and of course all of the products were the same. I think all of the Ikeas are the same. Even the menu was similiar with the addition of some common Czech dishes.
They did have this cool ice cream machine. you would stick your cone in a holder and press a button for you desired flavor and the machine would fill it on its own with your selection. I guess i’m easily amused. : )

i went to the new brooklyn ikea on monday night. hopped the FREE ferry from pier 11. the store was pretty quiet but i was very disappointed with their stock and customer service, but that comes with growing pains i guess. They do NOT have any summer supplies – tables, pots, pillows etc. and were out of quite a few items making people upset – after they were told it was in stock, got the printout for the register and then told nope …”sorry you waited in line”…

but the ferry was awesome!

here are some pics of the ride:

They say it will be free for a year. who knows for real. I just know it was a beautiful night and the water was great. 1/3 of the people on the boat were not going to ikea but using the ferry to get home. smile!
