i think i need one of these: corn stripper

After Erica’s post about the well-edited kitchen, a new gadget is last thing I should be shopping for. But this handy OXO corn stripper is only $12, and doesn’t take up much space (can you hear the rationalization?). We don’t always strip the corn off our our cobs, but thought of making yummy grilled corn salads has me thinking this little baby is a good idea. I think what sells it for me is that all the kernels are caught in handy little container, instead of flying all over your counter. It certainly would come in handy this weekend over the Fourth! Yes… don’t be parted from your money for this gadget. A nice, sharp small knife and some basic caution are all that are required to get kernels off the cob.

Maybe I’m the only one out there, but when I saw this gadget-post, I thought “wow!…this is exactly the thing I’ve been hoping for, but couldn’t think of” I love using fresh corn as an ingredient in salads, baked goods , and veggie dishes. Cutting the kernels off with a knife always leaves my kitchen a terrible mess. I’m hoping that someone out there posts a review of this so I can hear how well it works in real life, since I don’t imagine showing up at the uptown kitchnen store with an ear of cornand saying “I want to try before I buy” would go over really well (grin)…

Sorry, I should have said that what you need is a small sharp knife (like a paring knife) and a really big bowl (like large mixing bowl). Once you’ve washed the corn and removed the husk and the corn silk, stand the ear up in the bowl at an angle, and then cut away. Or sit down, put the bowl in your lap, and cut the corn inside (NOT over, actually inside) the bowl. No muss, no fuss, one more excuse to buy the fancy knife set and the beautiful Pyrex bowl set. Plus, the bowl will last forever and a (good) knife can be resharpened (not sure if this is true for the corn cutter dealy, which does not seem super sturdy to me), and both are easy to wash, easy to care for, and will have a million other uses in your home.
