strangely appealing: vortex water fountains

It’s probably not an invention that will make it to your backyard grotto anytime soon, but Wiliam Pye’s vortex water fountains are definitely making a splash online. According to Trendhunter, “The design involves pumping water at high pressure through a transparent acrylic cylinder. A sustained air core vortex forms in the centre. The steps around the fountain are viewing platforms for people to see the mesmerising vortex from above. A high quality filtration system is required to maintain the vortex at its maximum visual impact.” Got it? A bit of a step up from a tornado in a two liter. See video of the fountains in action (headline slightly NSFW) at Gizmodo. –Mary T.
