help! i need a shade for this lamp

I purchased a vintage lamp on Etsy several weeks ago, and I’ve been searching for a shade to go with it ever since. I’m looking for a simple round or oval drum shade in beige or grey (or greige!) fabric. I’d like a basic textured linen or cotton, but I’m open to other ideas. I’ve searched Bed, Bath and Beyond, Restoration Hardware, Pier 1 Imports, Anthropologie and T.J. Maxx, and I’ve yet to find a single shade that fits the bill. I never imagined it would be so hard to find something I thought was so basic. Does anyone have a go-to shade place? Must I resort to custom made? It seems silly to pay over $100 for a custom shade when the base cost just $40. Help, the light’s too bright and I gotta have shade! –Erica P.

great lamp! (and clock!). It is annoyingly hard to find simple drum shades- I so so prefer those over the typical taper, A- type you see everywhere. I have found plain drum shades at Target in the past, and also, for some reason, K-mart. You might get lucky at Goodwill or something too -

Given the list of stores you cited, you must live in Manhattan. If so, Just Shades is where you should be going. Go to http://www.justshadesny.com for directions, etc.

I hate to send people to Ye Olde Barn (so predictable!), but they are good for the occasional basic …

This linen drum shade in bisque would be nice with that lamp (nice find, by the way!):

I agree with K-Mart. They’ve got some surprisingly nice lamp things (including lamps) in there.

Target I know has multiple iterations of plain jane shades in oval, round, and occasionally other shapes. If one Target doesn’t have it, another may. Also, our local Lowe’s has lovely simple lampshades for reasonable prices. Good luck!

Also, as an afterthought, you get an astonishing list of results when you search “lampshade” on Etsy. (I LOVE the budgie lampshade, even if it is $150. Ouch! But so cute…

If you do live in NYC, also try Surprise!Surprise! on 3rd avenue, and I think 12th Street. I’m always running around the city trying everywhere, and in frustration I go to the little crowded store near me and it’s usually there : /

Also, Gracious Home has some nice ones, but can get pricey…

LOWES — I found the exact shade you’re describing for around $12 about a month ago! It’s a beige linen shade and it works fantastically with a wooden lamp I have. Hope this helps!

I totally agree with the Target suggestion….I’ve gotten many for my clients and shop there and never have been disappointed!

Sorry I don’t have advice! But was curious, where’d you get the alarm clock? I love it!

    Hey Ginny,

The clock is a vintage Seth Thomas that I bought at the antiques show at Pier 52 in New York about 6 months ago.

    Hope that helps!
