Mary, I ran across your blog while researching termites. I am the project manager for a large home improvement company in Sacramento ca. I have seen first hand the unbelievable damage these little creatures can do. So I wanted to get this out there quickly, before I have to get to work. If your home was built before the 80's and has a stucco exterior, there is a 90% chance you have termites! Let me explain why... In the 80's stucco companys started using a galvanized strip of metal at the bottom of the house called,"stucco stop". This was implimented to give the stucco a finished look or nice straight line at the bottom. Prior to that they would stucco right down to the ground. As you can now imagine, this gives termites a perfect access to your home without the tell tale signs of "tubes" most inspectors look for. I'm sorry this could not be longer, but I have to go do battle with more of these destructive and very inteligent creatures. If anyone out there would like to talk more on this subject, you can e-mail me.

Wow. This is great advice, Mary. I am sorry you had to suffer such hardship so that we all may benefit. The bug-on-bug pest control is a bit too creepy for me. Though I fear chemicals, I think that when it comes to termites, that's the way we would go.

What scares me -- there is a part of our house where the beams touch the dirt. No foundation, just beams hitting soil and rock. Our plan is to fix that someday, when we renovate... but that's a BIG someday.

Gulp.
