five things we learned last week

1. You have some great book recommendations for the last beach weekend of the summer. Says Brie “Water for Elephants by Sarah Gruen is a good ‘can’t put it down’ book about a circus worker in the 1920’s/30’s.” Click here to see more recommendations for beach read.
2. You like to cook for your babies as much as you do yourself. Holly T. wrote: “I made all my kids’ early foods as well. It was super easy, and I liked having such control over what went into their bodies. I bought whole, organic foods and usually steamed or lightly boiled them. Sweet potatoes were a big favorite with all my kids - after a while, I didn’t even puree them but would just dig out little blobs of cooked potato and let it be ‘finger food.’” Read more about how to cook babyfood.
3. Not all packages are meant for recycling. As Mar wrote after we suggested putting cupcakes in an egg carton: “This isn’t a good idea because of salmonella. Government health departments and extensions say you shouldn’t reuse just for this reason. Do whatever you want at home, but don’t make other people’s kids sick. The kids can’t make their own decision - they just see cupcakes.” See what’s causing the debate here.
4.Speaking of food safety, Katelyn wrote in with a tip about glazing your own ceramics. “All glazes that are fired in a kiln are generally food safe because theyre essentially glass after fired. The only exceptions are if you put the glaze on too thick, it will make little bubbles that WILL pop and leave pock marks that will collect food and bacteria” See more on food safe paint here
5. Not just the pros love Oxyclean. CWatson Says: “I use Oxyclean for just about everything. I have a 10 month old and some mornings I just fill the washer up with water and oxyclean and drop things in throughout the day.” See who else is a fan.
