post off: what’s in your grocery bag?

Mary T. unveiled her curiosity as to what people have in their fridge, and she’s clearly not alone. With a whole site dedicated to interior fridge shots, it seems inquiring minds just want to know! While shopping the greenmarket here in New York this morning, I found myself curious about what others were buying. With the endless options this time of year, I imagine people are purchasing all sorts of combinations of goodies. I picked up all the items you see in the above shot, and for just about $12.50. I’d love to hear about your latest grocery store or greenmarket bounty… and I’d love even more to see a picture! Anyone want to share? — Erica P

Well, since my CSA started up my grocery runs are a lot smaller and more driven by whatever is in the veggie goody bag for the week. Last night at Trader Joe’s I picked up tomato sauce, ground beef and (eep!!) precooked brown rice to make stuffed peppers with the onions and green peppers I’d gotten from the farm. I also bought english muffins for breakfasts this week, and a bag of salt & vinegar chips for pre-dinner snacking. To go with the stuffed peppers I made a carrot salad with ribbons of the colored carrots I’d also gotten from the farm.

Every week on I’ve been posting a photo of the contents of the CSA, which makes it easy to look back and see what I’ve gotten along the way. LOVE the CSA.

There’s a green market in Rock Center I can hit at lunchtime. I’m buying bushels of peaches to share with co-workers, plum tomatoes to make pasta sauce, and of course, local honey. Our hives probably won’t have any for us to take this fall, and I am trying fend off seasonal allergies. Ah-choo.

We really love PCC. It’s the local version of Whole Foods but it’s also a co-op. You can get the best deli items there and we go in regularly for salads that are pre-made and delicious. So here’s what we just got back with:

Ciao Bella green tea ice cream
    Ben and Jerry’s half-baked yogurt
organic ground turkey, fresh cilantro, red onion (going to make turkey burgers — perhaps I’ll RLTK it…)
    Cheddar Cheese
    heirloom tomatoes (yummm)
    peaches and nectarines (YUMMMMM)

Another vote for PCC! Sadly I moved away from my neighborhood PCC, but I was in the ‘hood the other day. I bought two kinds of kale, one purple that has this amazing almost floral smell to it, garlic, Essential Baking Co bread and some sliced hearts of palm. I also got some collard greens and cabbage and made a big homey soup (yes in August in Seattle sometimes, you want a warm cozy soup. As you curl up by the fireplace.) Oh and at Thriftway we picked up some Dungeness crabs, yummy. OK, and this really insane triple cream brie… it’s sort of like the ice cream of the brie world.

Recently, I decided to give my local vegetable walla a try (I live in India). I’ve been buying my produce from markets since coming in June, but the quality is frankly pretty poor & the price is outrageous! I knew both of these things were true going into the transaction - but was shocked by just how outrageous the produce prices were.

    I picked up 2 lemons, 3 tomatoes, 2 potatoes & 2 onions. Total cost? 20 rupees (47 cents).
