five things we learned last week

1. Looking for a good big dog toy? You may want to check the horse supply store. Naomi F recommends: “The jolly ball we got from our local horse supply store, the dogs love it, the rope lasted 5 minutes but the ball is one of their favorite toys and so far it’s taken a beating and it’s still in one piece.” Click here for more things for your jumbo-sized pooch.
2. There are some natural ways to deter mice from your house. Kristi writes: “I found out this summer that mint is an effective repellent for mice. I used this in my garden when they were robbing my tomato plants. I’m trying to prevent an infestation by placing mint tea bags in their usual haunts and keeping mint plants around the entryways.” Click here if you want to know more about dealing with a mouse the house!
3. Even if we’re guests on Thanksgiving, we still cook something. Holly D writes: “I have been making the same sweet potato pie for years and each year my brother in law ups the number he wants me to bring. I think i’m up to 4 this year.” Click here to share your T-day plans and menu!
4. We’re torn about the bottomless bowl. Helene says: “I like it. Of course there is a little silliness in it, but it does push the boundaries of a “bowl” and makes you think. Or at least react. I am of the belief that if everyone likes your work, then you’re not trying hard enough. You need a little controversy if you want to make art. Isn’t it better to elicit both love AND hate than simple indifference?” Click here to see the object of our debate!
5. Mary’s not the only one digging clams. Janelle says: “This brought back some memories, as a kid who grew up on the Washington coast, I spent many times clam-digging. Or as a kid, I would help my dad shovel for the first half hour, attempt to grab a clam, and then go play in the sand while he dug up the rest.” Click here for more on this sea-faring tradition.
