site we're psyched about: spoonflower.com

We often lament about how hard it is to find great fabric shops online. We have a few of our favorites, and use them again and again. But the next time we’re craving a pattern for a chair or a tablecloth that we just can’t find, we may just head over to spoonflower.com and create our own. This ingenious site will print anything you design on to cotton or upholstery fabric. It could be a logo, or a child’s drawing, or a simple doodle you love. Need inspiration before you get started? Check out this flickr group. Cost is $18/yard.

I’ve been dying to try this but am so far floundering on what to put on it – it’s such a fabulous idea.

Spoonflower has been something of a revelation for me, actually.

I had just started taking my first tentative steps into textile design when I found out it existed. Finally I decided to open a shop on Etsy to sell my patterns – I was making them anyway so rather than have them knocking around my portfolio in secret they could actually see the light of day. My next goal is to offer lots of designs that can be personalized.

It’s starting to take off which is so satisfying. Plus I have the added bonus of eventually getting to see what neat stuff people make with my designs! I am so happy that both Spoonflower & Etsy exist to give someone like me a platform.
