help! how should I reupholster this chair?

You know that chair-rehabs are one of our favorite projects! We have done some ourselves — both by hand, and by hiring others. It can be difficult or expensive, but the results are oh so amazing. It all starts with a vision. So, this reader writes in asking for your suggestions for this gem-in-the-rough above. What do you think?

I read your blog every day and thought someone there might be able to give me some reupholstering advice. I would like to reupholster a large chair that’s almost completely covered in fabric. Pictures attached. I don’t even know where to start (I realize this will be a time-consuming project!) and thought you might be able to suggest a good tutorial for this type of chair. I look forward to hearing from you! Thanks! — Sarah C.

Leave your suggestions for Sarah on the next page. Thanks!

It’s a nice leggy chair, what about a fitted slipcover with a short skirt to it? Might be less labor intensive, and would solve the problem of the slow grubby accumulation on the arms with a toss in the wash. I’m in the midst of a slipcover project, and after my own heart found Pink and Polka Dot’s tutorial and used it with success so far:

Oooo, I’d love to request a follow up on this post. I have two chairs I want to reuploster but have no clue how to do it or where to start. I need advice too.

i’d start with kerosene, then finish off with a match :-)

I learned how to upholster many years ago by taking a class. It was either through the park district (or maybe adult ed at the high school), and taught by a woman who had her own shop. I’ve upholstered many chairs since then. Perhaps there is something like that in your area. Junior colleges have similar classes too. There are lots of books available, also. Or you could ask at a fabric store that sells supplies, they might know of someone who teaches.

Good luck. I like your chair!

Thank you, guys! If I get around to reupholstering the chair, I will send in a before/after. Cheers!

I love the lines of it but there are also a lot of curves and a lot of cording involved. I would either hire it out or take a class that teaches you the basics. I’ve done chair seats before and there is a lot of work and materials just to get started. If you’re doing it yourself, I would choose a fabric that doesn’t need to line up.
