I did a display in an office building my company owns, and in an effort to be classy and PC, I decided to go monochromatic. I ordered a black menorah, black table, and black prelit tree (white lights), and then arranged blue tinsel around the base of the menorah and hung little blue foil-wrapped packages on the tree. I thought it looked very modern and pulled-together. Then some woman came downstairs and (without knowing I was the decorator) said, "Is that tree black? That's just WRONG. It looks charred."

[sigh} Can't please them all.

PS @styleosophy: I ordered it from Amazon, pre-lit, so the lights' wiring matches the tree.

It seems very Design-y to me. And not in a good way. But, to each his own. (I've never seen them before either!)

My future mother in law was years ahead of this trend. When my fiance was an emo little teen, their tree got a little burnt area on it, so instead of tossing it, she spray painted it black. We inherited it this year because we didn't want to buy a full size tree and they wanted to get rid of it.

It's not that different from a dark green tree, and looks amazing with brightly colored ornaments and strands of single color lights. This year I was a bit money-tight, but when they are on sale I am snatching up all the pink and silver lights, ornaments, and garlands for next year. It'll be glorious on those black branches.

I like the idea...but I enjoy a white Christmas tree, with black, silver and clear ornaments. My lights are white also. And that would be the thing that would hold me back from purchasing a black tree, I like for the light strands to match the color of the tree. It would be hard to find that black on black strung Christmas lights.

Martha Stewart pushed them hard last year at Macy's and Kmart both, this year the only black trees you can find are super expensive. They were far less pricey last year and the year before.
They looked pretty awesome all done up, but they truly had to be DONE UP for them to not look like The Night Before Goth Christmas.

So they were a hot fad that nobody knew about? Hmm. Doesn't that make them, you know, NOT a fad?
