real life test kitchen: 10 grain hot cereal with three berry syrup

I’ll admit I take the easy road to breakfast most weekday mornings with a bowl of cold cereal and a handful of raisins. This morning was a different story. I woke up craving something hot, filling and nutritious. I had an open package of Bob’s Red Mill 10 Grain Hot Cereal in my cabinet and a variety of frozen berries in the freezer. Just 10 minutes later I had a delicious bowl of fill-you-up, creamy hot grains. I topped them off with a delectable maple berry syrup and some fragrant toasted almonds. Yummm! 10 Grain Hot Cereal with 3 Berry Syrup
Serves 1

- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1/2 cup Bob’s Red Mill 10 Grain Hot Cereal (or try using cream of wheat or traditional rolled oats)
- pinch of salt
- splash of heavy cream
- 1/4 cup frozen berries (raspberries, blackberries and/or cherries)
- 1/8 cup maple syrup
- 1 Tbsp sliced almonds, toasted
- 1 Tbsp. honey

1 Bring the water to a boil and whisk in the cereal and salt. Reduce heat to a simmer. Cover the pot and cook about 10 minutes, or until the grains are soft. Remove from heat and quickly stir in the heavy cream.
2 While the grains are cooking prepare the berry syrup. Place the frozen berries in a small saucepan and heat gently. Pour the syrup over the berries and continue to cook over low heat until berries are fully defrosted and syrup is warm.
3 Spoon the cereal into a bowl and top with the berry syrup. Sprinkle with the toasted almonds and drizzle with the honey.

That sounds (and looks) delicious. I had Starbucks’ “perfect oatmeal” today because we ran so late this morning–I didn’t get to eat at home. I love the toppings you can get with it. You can also do some yummy things for breakfast with with bulghur. So satisfying!
