toy storage we can stand by

Here’s what I have learned about toy storage in my brief experience as a mom: It needs to be easy to toss the stuff in, and just as easy for the kid to take the stuff out. Oeuf, the company that makes the most insanely cute kid sweaters, has just revealed this new piece of functional furniture, aptly named the Toy Store. It has three levels of rotating bins that allow everything to be easily reachable. It’s designed for toys… but wouldn’t it be amazing in a kitchen pantry or a basement? I love the idea of tossing things like bread loaves, bags of chips, boxes of tea and such in place where they can be seen and found quickly. Oh yeah, it’s made in Latvia. $496. — Angela M.

This is really cute, but for those of us with very small spaces, I find that I need more configurable storage. I’ve found via toy boxes to work well for that purpose (www.viatoybox.com)

It’s neat, but it’s styled nicely in the photo…in real life, all the junk tossed in there (blocks, trains, animals, cars) would give the room a messy look. Unless you wanted to spend some time every day styling in. I like toy storage to be semi-concealed. My 3-year old has a bench in his room with a seat on top and 3 bins beneath – it’s my favorite toy storage piece. At the end of they day, everything get tossed back in the bins and slid back into the bench – the room is instantly clean.

I think the idea with this is easy-out & easy-in so the toys can stand a chance at being put away! Designed to accomodate what we do, not what we’d like to do.

@julie the bin seat sounds very fast too with the added advantage of a lid. I wish all kids rooms had furniture bolted onto the wall with floors that opened like trap doors! (warning: make sure to remove children before activating stow function).
