love for readymade magazine

Update: Please read the first comment and click the link supplied by Leah. And then read this entry with a grain of salt. I may have unknowingly written a eulogy for another great magazine. –Mary T.

I got a free subscription to ReadyMade as part of a promotion with some concert tickets, and I set aside my first few issues with barely a glance. But with Domino magazine closing up shop and more publications on death watch, I decided to take a closer look. And I really liked what I saw. I wasn’t a reader before 2008, so I’m not sure how the mag has evolved over the years. But the latest issue (February/March) reminded me of, dare I say, the late, great Budget Living. (Full disclosure: Angela M. was once Budget Living’s editor, but I didn’t know her back then.) This month’s ReadyMade has DIYs on making light fixtures from cake pans and inexpensive glass globes. There’s a great rehab of a sideboard. But my favorite part was ReadyMade’s ability to turn economical ideas into a celebration. The issue is filled with ideas for gathering friends for potlucks, bringing the party home, and sharing the expenses. You can get a lot of great ideas online, too, but this is one print magazine I’ll be hanging onto — and renewing when the time comes. –Mary T.

ReadyMade was independently launched a few years ago by two uber-creative friends in Berkeley, California. I think sometime last year it was purchased by the publishing conglamorate Meredith Corp. A few weeks ago, word came down that the magazine — minus its founders and its entire editorial staff — was being moved to Meredith HQ in Des Moines, Iowa. The staff was literally locked out shortly after that — they couldn’t even access their email. Suffice it to say, I think you’ll be seeing a *very* different ReadyMade from here on out. Sad.

Leah, that is horrible news indeed. This would explain why the current issue isn’t online and instead it’s still Christmas; I was wondering about that. Thanks for the update. Great…I may have to revisit my whole opinion here. Sigh.

oh no! that makes me so sad to hear. i have every issue of readymade since the beginning of time. depressed :(

BUT, not nearly as depressed as i was when budget living closed down. i was truly, truly addicted to that beauty. i have the BL books, too!

So sad. All these folding magazines are leaving a big gap in my mailbox, and I don’t know what to replace them with.

[...] 3. It seems that none of our favorite magazines are safe in these tough times. Has anyone else heard more about this story? I am really appalled about Shoshanna and Grace, and absolutely want to cancel my subscription if their ouster is official. Can’t find any other blogger posting about this more recently either. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi, guys. Our pal Megan at Not Martha has more conversation on this (including a weigh-in from a former ReadyMade staffer in comments) here:
