five things we learned last week

1. Wow. You like your coffee. And you like cooking with it! Our Starbucks VIA giveaway has garnered more than 200 comments and counting. You’ve told us about coffee-calling recipes ranging from cupcakes (thank you Emily!) to brisket. If you’ve got one you want to mention for a chance to win this great goodie bag, click here and leave a comment before Tuesday!

2. Fresh flowers are the best way to brighten a room on a budget. As Aimee wrote: “There is just something about fresh flowers that add so much to the overall look of your home, not to mention the fact that they make you so much happier when you walk in and see beautiful colors. I may have to cut back over the next couple of weeks, but am looking forward to my bulbs blooming and the farmer’s market opening in the next few months where I can always find beautiful flowers for less.” Do you think fresh flowers are a splurge or a necessity? 3. Films are even more fun when they are watched with good food.
Ellobie writes of our Oscar night food suggestions: “This reminds me of my old film club in Richmond, Virginia. Think book club, but we were too busy (i.e.; lazy) to read books. The food served at club would often be themed to the film.” Click here to see our Slumdog Millionaire-inspired treats!

4. We save old socks in hopes of uses ahead. Tyna writes: “I have lots of cute socks with holes that I’ve been saving to use for paint rags (someday I will paint my diningroom) or… something, now I have a use.” See Orla Kiely’s cute sock pot twist here!

5. You have some great ideas on how to self-cater a wedding.
Marie says: “We went with a Middle Eastern theme, which allowed us to satisfy our many vegetarian friends and also our mostly meat-eating relatives.” Click here for some amazing recipe suggestions for a garden wedding.
