I think cleaning the windows and opening them to let fresh air into the house is the#1 way to freshen the house!
March 20th, 2009 at 5:06 am
I open all the windows to air out the house, and all the blankets, flat sheets are draped over the outside railing to air dry.
March 20th, 2009 at 5:22 am
I love to change up all the bedding to set a lighter, brighter mood for spring!
March 20th, 2009 at 5:25 am
I also open up all the windows, letting fresh air and sun come in. Then I take out all my spring/summer clothes and put away those stuffy sweaters and coats.
March 20th, 2009 at 5:25 am
New curtains and bedding!
March 20th, 2009 at 5:29 am
Once the sun is out longer, windows open is a requirement. Store all the heavy blankets (wash first) and bring out the lighter shawls. Dust bunnies tend to run rampant – so catch them while you can! Bring home some lovely flowers. Even a slightly messy room will look better with fresh daffodils or tulips.
March 20th, 2009 at 5:46 am
To freshen my home in the spring….I grab my Grandaughters and say….HEY!!! want to make a couple bucks and help Grandma out.
March 20th, 2009 at 5:49 am
I use Mrs. Meyers products for the laundry. I love that sheets and towels washed weeks ago continue to greet me with fresh lemon verbena-y smell when opening the linen closet.
excitement for spring cleaning? i has it.
March 20th, 2009 at 5:53 am
The way I you freshen up my home for spring is by switching all of the coverings to white and pale colors…pillow covers, duvet covers, curtains. The extra white seems to bring in more light, especially in the morning.
March 20th, 2009 at 6:02 am
I often focus on the outside, cleaning any remaining leaves or dead things out of the flower beds so my daffodils that are coming up can be seen. We also put some effort into cleaning the garage, which we use a lot for grilling and games in the summer. It’s often very neglected during the cold of winter.
March 20th, 2009 at 6:12 am
I can’t wait to put the screen in my front door and leave it wide open all weekend!
March 20th, 2009 at 6:13 am
Of all of the cleaning + scrubbing that I do… the only way that my house feels really clean is if the windows are all open and a breeze is drifting through the house. I love Spring!
March 20th, 2009 at 6:18 am
I definitely go through all the junk i accumulated over the winter and get rid of at least half of it
March 20th, 2009 at 6:37 am
- change the glass window/door inserts to screens and air out the house
- clean the windows, letting light filter in even more
- repot plants and start seedlings
- wash all of the linens, switching to lighter colors
- start cleaning out clutter with a spring yard sale in mind
- starting thinking about painting!
March 20th, 2009 at 6:47 am
I think we all must agree, first thought is open windows and doors! (check started last week) then remove leaves and debris (check) then before I even tackle the indoors I brush down the dog and cat until they are nearly bare (this weekend!)
March 20th, 2009 at 6:48 am
our house needs a good scrub down and airing out. Since we live in a cold climate, by this time of year our house is dry, stale and needs a few days of open doors and windows!
March 20th, 2009 at 7:00 am
I do all the high dusting (including ceiling corners!) and boil lemons. The lemon scent stays for days and purifies the air.
March 20th, 2009 at 7:04 am
Like everyone else: open the windows! A return to fresh air is definitely the best thing about the nicer weather.
March 20th, 2009 at 7:21 am
i am going to clean out all of my under-bed containers. that yarn i haven’t used in 4 years? out! i have cuter yarn than that! that 4th and 5th hammer? i don’t need that many!
March 20th, 2009 at 7:21 am
Spring cleaning – this year I’m ready. These products look great. Would love to try them. Thanks for the giveaway.
March 20th, 2009 at 7:36 am
Give the dogs a bath!
March 20th, 2009 at 7:41 am
I give my bathroom a major scrub-down, and of course, open the windows as often as I can!
March 20th, 2009 at 7:52 am
I like to change the sheets on my bed to make my room seem lighter, like my white or light green sheets. I also LOVE to open windows for natural light, especailly with the longer hours of day light!
March 20th, 2009 at 8:03 am
open the windows. that’s really all it takes for me.
March 20th, 2009 at 8:06 am
I open the windows, change all the household linens, and start cutting flowers from my garden. It’s beautiful time of year!
March 20th, 2009 at 8:22 am
I have to agree, that there is nothing nicer than finally getting to open all the windows and doors and getting that spring air in, stale house air out! I also look forward to finally hanging my laundry outside on my retractable laundry line
March 20th, 2009 at 8:24 am
Like many others, being able to open my windows and let the fresh air stream in without freezing is the best part of spring “cleaning” for me. I also go through closets and cabinets and purge what I don’t need or want any more, organizing as I go.
March 20th, 2009 at 8:32 am
We open the windows on a sunny day, start dusting (including the ceiling fans), and take breaks on the patio with lemonade. I also do an intense vacuuming with all the attachments to get the dust and dirt that’s been hiding in corners and crevices.
March 20th, 2009 at 8:46 am
Open up all the windows and wash them with a mix of vinegar/water/lemon essential oils. Fresh air and fresh scents . . . mmmm.
And I love Mrs. Meyer’s!
March 20th, 2009 at 8:47 am
I love the rhubard scent when I clean my room, but I am really excited to smell the new snap pea!
March 20th, 2009 at 8:53 am
I open my windows and patio doors as well! Nothing’s better at freshening up than a good breeze! Then I follow up by a really good vacuuming and dusting session in my apartment!
March 20th, 2009 at 8:54 am
I swap out the winter things on my coffee table for spring ones. Light colored vases, books with bright color covers. And fresh flowers are a must.
I also try to go through my closet and file my clothes into: keep, mend, give, toss. This was I’m not holding onto things I don’t wear any more.
March 20th, 2009 at 9:01 am
Washing out the kitchen cupboards with the windows open – leaves the room feeling fresh and airy.
March 20th, 2009 at 9:05 am
Re windows: Agreed, and don’t forget any basement or attic windows. Fresh air in those less-cared for spots can make a huge difference.
Like some of you, I like to purge my closet. But I also purge the pantry. With close-dated items, consider donating them to a local food pantry or food re-preparer.
But most important for me: play fresh music during the whole thing. New season, clean house, new sounds = happiness!
March 20th, 2009 at 9:17 am
Open the windows, put the flannel bedsheets away, wash curtains, wash baseboards, wash cobwebs away behind radiators, start taking weekly donations (it feels like) to Goodwill as we sort through winter clothes.
March 20th, 2009 at 9:27 am
I open the windows, clean all the linen, wash the “winter” comforter and put it away, bring out the “summer” comforter and lay it out. But really, it’s not really spring until I do my annual, “I think I’ll plant some herbs!” gardening with basil, cilantro, and mint.
March 20th, 2009 at 9:34 am
First, I open the windows to get fresh air in. Then, wash those windows and the window frames….along with blinds, winter linens, curtains, etc. etc. All that fun stuff! Sure feels good when I’m done!
March 20th, 2009 at 9:36 am
Weed out and donate a ton of stuff. And sweep and bring in some plants and flowers.
March 20th, 2009 at 9:47 am
For me, the best kind of spring cleaning is to get rid of things you don’t need!
March 20th, 2009 at 9:58 am
I open up all the windows, flip the mattresses, and put the pillows out in the sun. I also sweep everywhere and take a bunch of stuff to the thrift store for donation.
March 21st, 2009 at 5:14 am
I’m planning to open up all my windows this weekend and then go through the house finding things to get rid of and donate. Nothing makes it fresher than removing excess junk.
March 21st, 2009 at 5:49 am
Getting rid of all the stuff I don’t use so the place doesn’t look so cluttered! & I’m switching out a few of the photos I have hanging on the wall to mix things up.
Thanks!
March 21st, 2009 at 7:31 am
i rely on my best friend to send roses that not only look beautiful, but make my house smell delicious!
March 21st, 2009 at 8:08 am
I love when it’s time to switch the bedding and clothing. It feels like finally saying GOODBYE to winter when those heavy things are stored away.
March 21st, 2009 at 8:13 am
The first day of spring in my mind is the first day I can open the house up and letting the ocean breeze come through. Then I oil the butcher block.
March 21st, 2009 at 9:35 am
Ahh… spring. I open the windows (and clean all the window tracks and blinds). Pack away the sweaters, pull out the sandals, and I’m ready! What a wonderful giveaway! Thank you!
March 21st, 2009 at 11:58 am
Move the furniture I never move during normal cleaning and vacuum up all the horrors I find.
March 21st, 2009 at 12:38 pm
cobweb patrol!
March 21st, 2009 at 1:19 pm
Oh, the first thing I do is keep the windows open as often as possible!
Then, I usually go down to my nearest nursery and grab some springy potted flowers to bring some color inside!
March 21st, 2009 at 4:05 pm
Washing the windows would be a big help! This year I plan to actually vacuum under and behind the furniture–woo-hoo! Thanks for the giveaway…I love Mrs. Meyers’ stuff but am upset with them for discontinuing my beloved ironing spray–boo!
March 21st, 2009 at 4:21 pm
I’m a freshman in college, so this is the first time I’ve had to spring clean without the conveniences of home (ie vacuum, abundant cleaning supplies, or even a broom for that matter). So I started by cleaning out my drawers. It’s worked wonders! Clean drawers make me want to organize everything else since there’s an assigned place for each item. Cleaning from the inside out is definitely the way to go. Now if I could just get my roommates to clean, too…
March 21st, 2009 at 4:28 pm
I also open all the windows the moment it’s warm enough to let a clean cross breeze freshen up the house. Then a vase of fresh flowers makes me feel like I’m coming home to a brand new house!
March 21st, 2009 at 4:56 pm
it wasn’t on purpose, the other day the sink in the laundry room that leads into the kitchen overflowed during a load of laundry, water was everywhere. We quickly opened the door in there and pushed the water out. While the door was out and I was mopping the floors I noticed how much brighter and cheery the kitchen looked with more natural light. Mopping the floors was more fun in that light.
March 21st, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Fresh air and sheets that aren’t flannel! Love the sheets in November. Tired of them by March.
March 21st, 2009 at 5:40 pm
I open every single window in the house. Nothing makes you feel more excited for summer than the invigorating feel of crisp air in your home.
March 21st, 2009 at 6:59 pm
To freshen things up for spring, I tuck away all the extra bedding and put something light on the bed, usually in a brighter color. Gotta lose the flannel sheets. Usually let the air circulate a bit when it finally warms up!
March 22nd, 2009 at 12:02 am
I change some vases and decorations on the table and use lighter color things. I loved the rhubarb set from last year!
March 22nd, 2009 at 3:41 am
Since we have 3 dogs & 2 boys our spring cleaning revolves around touching up those dings on the walls & painting !
March 22nd, 2009 at 5:06 am
Opening the windows to let in the light and breeze is a huge thing. However, more importantly to me is to give the entire house a good cleaning. This means washing curtins, windows, floors, walls, etc. Then, after all that hard work, being able to relax on my porch.
March 22nd, 2009 at 6:15 am
I am giving everything a thorough cleaning – the floors, the curtains, the windows! And these products rock!
March 22nd, 2009 at 10:03 am
Here in northern Minnesota, as soon as the snow melts enough for me to get to my outdoor clotheslines, our bed sheets are the first items hanging out there, followed by blankets, quilts and scatter rugs. There is nothing more heavenly than to sleep under sheets that have dried outside. It’s the best smell in the world.
I just wish I could do that today when it is sunny with gusty winds. Unfortunately, there is still a foot of snow on the ground. I am tempted but I would need snowshoes to get there!
March 22nd, 2009 at 11:51 am
Being an apartment dweller in a college town, spring cleaning usually involves moving! However, I try and take these few lovely months to SLOWLY and THOROUGHLY clean my apartment – if I’m moving, it makes things sooooo much easier (after all, the more I get rid of the less I have to move!), and even if I’m not, it always feels good to purge!
March 22nd, 2009 at 2:21 pm
I like to open all the windows and doors to get a HUGE, long blast of fresh air!
March 22nd, 2009 at 3:33 pm
I let my kids play outside. When they come in they smell so fresh and green!
March 22nd, 2009 at 7:02 pm
to start, fresh flowers in the kitchen and bedroom, window boxes for all the windows filled with new buds and new yellow sheets and bedding! excitement all around! i need this, i live with all boys…. messy boys, i use mrs. meyers all purpose cleaner on a weekly basis and im getting low.
March 22nd, 2009 at 7:19 pm
i always do a top-to-bottom spring cleaning, then change out the accessories to the appropriate season. i switch out my favorite winter themed photos to more springy ones- can’t have santa photos out when the easter bunny is coming! i bring out the lighter color pillow covers, etc.
i alway buy a bunch of fresh flowers as my reward and while the bulk go in the dining and living room, i always put at least one bloom in each room as a sweet reminder of warmer days to come.
visit my new blog and enter my giveaway for a blue ipod!
March 22nd, 2009 at 7:22 pm
I made my own Febreze using a combo of essential oils with cheap vodka as a base (smell evaporates very fast). I spray upholstered stuff with it when things are getting stuffy-smelling and it’s too cold to do a full airing-out of the house.
March 23rd, 2009 at 5:01 am
[...] etc. on the kitchen table and fling open the windows. Oh I love spring!” Click here to tell us how you get your house ready for spring, and you could win a Mrs Meyer’s Snap Pea Cleaning [...]
March 23rd, 2009 at 5:17 am
We open windows on breezy days, and haul things outside to sit in the sun and fresh air (futon, rugs, ourselves).
March 23rd, 2009 at 6:45 am
I clean the windows and then keep them open for a while! Bright windows and fresh air makes me feel warm days are not far away!
March 23rd, 2009 at 7:11 am
We spray our bed pillows with a very light spritz of all natural cleaner and leave in the sun all day. The sun seems to bleach, clean and freshen everything. Alsol we pick up all our rugs shake them out and leave them in the fresh air all day. All our duvet covers get a good cleaning and we are ready for the warm summer nights to come.
Also, today I dumped a bunch of baking soda down our kitchen and bath sinks to clean them up a bit.
March 23rd, 2009 at 8:22 am
I welcomed Spring with a day of cleaning using 20 Mule Borax!
March 23rd, 2009 at 8:45 am
Open all the windows, dust everything, and clean the floor!
March 23rd, 2009 at 9:15 am
1) Open the windows to flush winter smells from the house.
2) Do the deep clean of the whole house.
3) Get rid of the clutter that isn’t being used and won’t be used, and donate to charity.
4) Set a vase of fresh flowers on the table to celebrate Spring!
March 23rd, 2009 at 10:51 am
I recently moved into a tiny house that has lots of windows BUT NO window screens! So two weeks ago I made screens for my windows so I could enjoy the cool evenings! Love it!
Next curtains to blow in said breeze.
March 23rd, 2009 at 1:36 pm
I am going to do some serious window washing!
March 23rd, 2009 at 4:46 pm
I drag the deck chairs and table out of the shed, get the flower pots ready, wash the windows… well, okay, I make the kiddo wash the windows. Isn’t that the point of having kids? Making them do the crummy chores??
All the sunlight streaming in the windows seems to make it impossible to ignore the dark corners that winter created. There’s always one weekend when I start cleaning and just don’t stop ’til it’s done.
March 23rd, 2009 at 5:16 pm
I change the dining table linens to spring colors, put new covers on the throw pillows, put a lighter colored throw blanket over the couch, bring out my spring colored cups and glasses, switch out the deep red shades for white airy curtains, change bed linens to all white, sit back and have a nice mango smoothie instead of hot chocolate
March 24th, 2009 at 4:58 am
I need some spring cleaning motivation – maybe this will help get me going
March 24th, 2009 at 5:06 am
I will be spring cleaning throughout this week and on Saturday doing the big stuff- shining the wood, clearing basement cobwebs, etc. I’m really looking forward to peeling back the dead leaves in the garden and seeing what’s sprouting! What a lovely, exciting time of year.
March 24th, 2009 at 5:34 am
I would love this to make my house smell clean and springy!
March 24th, 2009 at 5:34 am
Fresh flowers in every room!
March 24th, 2009 at 5:53 am
I live in a tiny studio, so spring cleaning means it’s time for a purge of all the unused (and long forgotten!) stuff tucked away in boxes under the bed and in the closet.
March 24th, 2009 at 5:53 am
I mow the lawn and open all the windows in the house. Then I dust everything top to bottom, change out all the bedsheets, and look for a place to hang the hammock for the rest of the day.
March 24th, 2009 at 5:55 am
Part of spring cleaning that differs from regular cleaning is getting all the outside areas tidy and ready for backyard hangouts. Our back screened-in porch needs to be rid of the layers of dust it collected over the winter!
March 24th, 2009 at 6:16 am
I open windows and put away things like heavy blankets and flannel sheets. I also need flowers this time of year-pansies, daffodils, tulips. I got a bunch of 10 daffodils for $1.99, and it makes things look so cheerfull!
March 24th, 2009 at 6:30 am
We like to change the heavy, winter curtains for the lighter-colored linen curtains, sweep off cobwebs all around the outside of the house, and wash the big living room windows, inside and out. Let the sun shine in!
March 24th, 2009 at 6:34 am
I need cleaning inspiration! Maybe the new scent will get me to move away from the computer and clean something…finally…
March 24th, 2009 at 6:45 am
1. Daffodils. Bunches of them.
2. A squeaky clean, freshly brushed pooch.
3. Taking a vacuum to the edges of the molding, where the furballs like to hang out.
4. Open windows.
5. Nap. Nothing facilitates spring cleaning like a good nap.
March 24th, 2009 at 6:54 am
I bring in fresh flowers & vacum my houe from top to bottom. I also take down any drapes or curtains and throw them in the wash. Lastly, I mop the floors which kind of get neglected during the year. Oh, and one more thing…I give away a lot of the kids’ toys that they’ve outgrown and gather up the clothing too for giveaway.
March 24th, 2009 at 7:00 am
i count on all the sunlight coming in through the windows to reveal dust and dirt wasn’t as visible during winter’s overcast days.
March 24th, 2009 at 7:13 am
Open windows, change throw pillows, clean out cabinets, store coats and scarves and shovels and blankets, buy new plants!
March 24th, 2009 at 7:17 am
I change over a number of accent items like my cooking spoon jar and chandelier shades from red to blue. Now our friends always say, “It must be spring because the blue stuff is back!” And I get a new doormat.
March 24th, 2009 at 8:05 am
I change out all of the bed linens — swapping the darker, heavier colors and fabrics for lighter weight and softly colored blankets.
Open those windows and clean everything like crazy! I love the feeling of the wind coming in through the windows when power cleaning!
March 24th, 2009 at 8:06 am
I summon the magical cleaning fairies to clear the clutter and dust.
March 24th, 2009 at 8:43 am
it’s not quite spring in Montana yet (well, we had a nice 50 degree day followed by 8 inches of snow, doh!) but I’ve already started weeding out all of the winter clothes that didn’t get much wear this year. i always have a goodwill box going and when it’s full i drop it off at the donation site.
i’m looking forward to taking down the heavy curtains, changing out the blankets and being able to hang our laundry outside to dry again.
love the meyers line, my sis has a 1 year old and she swears by the stain remover!
March 24th, 2009 at 8:47 am
I start seeds so I can transplant them outside when it’s warm enough. On nice days, I open a few windows and let the fresh air in. I also wash and store winter blankets, and clothes. Some of our clothing get donated to a large area garage sale. That way we can thin things out.
March 24th, 2009 at 9:07 am
The spring cleaning mood doesn’t strike twice, so when I have it– I pounce on it! Just like everyone, I love to open up the windows first. Then I grab my wireless headphones that are huge and make me look like a martian and I dance and sing around the house while I vacuum, dust and organize! I make sure no one is home
March 24th, 2009 at 9:21 am
Throw things away! The best way to freshen up for Spring is to clean out and SIMPLIFY! -Emily
March 24th, 2009 at 9:46 am
I throw out things from my closet that hasn’t had any wear in the past year, I clean all the walls and windows and open up all the windows for fresh air. All of this is done with a strong drink at the ready (you’ll need at least one!) and lots of loud music to get me hopping!
March 24th, 2009 at 9:56 am
i ADORE mrs. meyers!
after two weeks worth of puppy sitting (for a non-housebroken dog, ahem!) our stuffy apartment needs more than my stand by of opening all the windows and letting the fresh, crisp air in!
March 24th, 2009 at 10:05 am
I rearrange all the plants in the house so they get a new patch of sun. I also clean out my closet and donate what I can!
March 24th, 2009 at 10:10 am
While it’s still too chilly to open windows, I buy flowers. Then I air out the joint, give the floors a good scrub, hang some new art and rearrange the furniture.
March 24th, 2009 at 10:11 am
I live with two boys, age 25 and 28. They are definitely not the cleanest and they can never quite understand WHY I would get mad that they leave their dirty cups on the coffee table, why I’d be mad they spilled something, threw a towel on it and left it there or why the black paint smeared on the carpet makes me see our deposit disappearing into the night.
So to freshen up for spring, I encourage them to leave for the day. Go fishing or hiking or biking or whatever it is boys like to do, so that I can clean in peace. And maybe take a nap before they come back home and undo my efforts.
On a lighter note, they open jars like no other.
March 24th, 2009 at 10:46 am
I paint furniture, refold all the clothing in my desk, light candles, open windows/doors, and hang clothes on clotheslines.
March 24th, 2009 at 10:51 am
I can’t wait to leave my patio door open and cut fresh flowers for my vases! And my home definitely needs a good cleaning and de-cluttering right now!
I’d love to try Mrs. Meyer’s! What adorable packaging.
March 24th, 2009 at 10:59 am
Swiffer all the blinds and fans, and of course brush the cats!
March 24th, 2009 at 11:09 am
Give all the dogs a bath!
March 24th, 2009 at 11:17 am
i would love to win this! i am totally hooked on mrs meyer’s products, but haven’t tried this one yet.
every spring i like to rearrange stuff and do an annual deep dusting. it helps shake off my winter funk.
March 24th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
i get rid of things that haven’t been used in the past year – it is amazing how much space this opens up, it declutters my life and makes everything feel new again.
March 24th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
I love Mrs. Meyers. When I use their products I feel like I can clean without holding my breath to avoid sucking in chemical fumes.
March 24th, 2009 at 12:34 pm
oooh!!! i love mrs meyers
March 24th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
I also clean out the junk…it’s give away time at my house. Paininting the kitchen a new beautiful yellow for spring. Wash the windows.
March 24th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
Enter me, please! thanks!!
March 24th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
I just bought a new house Thur. Literally. And I’ve made a pledge to bring only environmentally conscious cleansers into my new home to start off on the right foot. The Mrs. Meyers’ set would be a lovely addition.
March 24th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
I’m clearing out the clutter and getting a cleaning service. I desperately need the help!
