i tried haagen-dazs five (for research purposes only)

Haagen-Dazs with just five ingredients and a lovely, simplified package design? I couldn’t just let that go by without a taste. So, purely for research purposes, we brought home two pints of Haagen-Dazs Five: Brown Sugar and Mint. The Mint I like a lot; it’s simple, like the name implies. Not overly sweet, no fake coloring, tastes a lot like the homemade ice cream I used to get at family reunions. (I realize that sounds a little twee, but it’s true.) The Brown Sugar didn’t get such great reviews. To both my husband and me it tastes a little harsh — a little more cream to the brown sugar ratio might help, or maybe we’re just not that into the taste of brown sugar as a main ingredient. Overall, though, my interest is piqued, and I do love the idea of simpler food. We may have to give the other flavors a try so that I can report more fully. The sacrifices I make for this blog! –Mary T.

If you haven’t tried the Vanilla, go back and give it a go. I thought perhaps it was a tiny bit eggy, but overall it’s a decent alternative to regular fat Vanilla.
I’ve been dying to try these. I love that there are only five ingredients…. that means it’s healthy, right? :)
I purposely try not to look at the ice cream freezer in the grocery store. Maybe this stuff would be worth breaking that rule for. I could see where Brown Sugar wouldn’t be a good main ingredient, but most of the others sound good. I’m wondering if the Ginger flavor would be too strong, though. A little ginger goes a long way, and if ginger is one of only five ingredients, well…
We always had homemade ice cream at my family reunions too.

Gadora has tried both flavors you’ve pictured (In the same bowl, and over a warm and decadent walnut brownie from Central Market). WOW. The mint was my fave. But I WILL have a another spoonful of the Brown Sugar on another day. Had no idea Ginger existed. Must try!
I really like this stuff. I’ve tried passion fruit, mint, brown sugar, and ginger. All were tasty and reminded me of homemade. I agree that brown sugar was a little overpowering, but I enjoyed it; reminded me of dulce de leche.
i was just at the store and saw these. my favorite from this brand is coffee. and if you look at the ingredients its only 5. so whats the difference between regular coffee and only 5 coffee? all i could decifer is a few calories in between. any clues?
We had our own little sampling party- we tried the chocolate, ginger, vanilla, brown sugar & coffee. We searched and searched for the Mint but couldn’t find it, I was really disappointed. They also didn’t have the passion fruit.
The Ginger was really my standout favorite- absolutely amazing. We’ll be buying that again for special treats.
The others were good, but really not blown away by them. The Brown Sugar was almost too much, the first bite was nice, but after that it was lost in the sweetness. All in all yummy, but not a necessity.
I have seen these and wondered about them. I really want to try the brown sugar flavor!
I tried the ginger.
Ginger can be a bit assertive but the balance seemed just right in this ice cream. I would recommend it.
I have tried most of these (vanilla and chocolate being the only exceptions) and they’re all really good! The brown sugar was the least impressive, definitely, but the mint and passion fruit blew me away!
Passion fruit is very good and super smooth. I like the ingredients. I trust it.
I like the vanilla one. A tad sweet, but very rich and creamy with loads of vanilla. Will buy again.
