bathroom humor

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

I have a plain old blue shower cap hanging from a hook in my bathroom. It’s one of those things I’d like to hide away, but if you saw the size of my bathroom (and the lack of storage) you would understand this is pretty impossible. Well, I just spotted some funny new shower caps on Happy Mundane that I’d be proud to display. The six different designs are from Urban Outfitters and cost just $6. Don’t look for them in the store; they’re only available online. — Erica P.

a chair that mixes old and new

Monday, March 9th, 2009

It’s been six months since I told you all about my desire for a new office chair. I’d love to use this post to show off a new purchase, but I’ve yet to find a replacement. Part of the problem is deciding if I want to go with a classic wooden seat or a more modern plastic/lucite number. The Prince Charles side chair from Modernica would solve this problem. It’s a perfect mix of old (classic walnut legs) and new (fiberglass seat and wire frame). I’d love it in terracota or red. If only it were cheaper! –Erica P.

five things we learned last week

lightbulb.jpg

1. When we think of decorating with silhouettes, it’s not just kids’ cute profiles we imagine, but our pooches, too. As Lisa says: “i would have a silhouette made of my jack russell terrier and put it beside the front door, opposite the side where he sits to watch traffic. That will give him something to bark at!” Click here to tell us what you would want a silhouette of, and you could win one in our giveaway!

2. Speaking of pets, we definitely love them more than anything else in our houses. You gave Mary great advice for her cat-damaged leather sofa. JulieKP wrote: “If you can stand it I would let the couch be what it is. You have a beautiful cat and even though your couch isn’t perfect it will always remind you of her. Memories are far better than any perfect couch.” Click here to read more (and feel free to offer more tips!).

3. Sometimes, an old cook can learn a new trick!
As our contributor Holly Donaldson said: “I love finding out about doing things that we consider ’second nature.’ Recently I changed the way I cook rice. Before, boiling, measuring, simmering waiting for the little holes…….. Now boiling water adding rice and draining. So simple and a ton better!!!!” Click here to read about a new way to cook pasta.

4. Thinking of selling stuff on eBay, here’s some advice.
Allison says: “I just want to hit on the importance of PICTURES. No matter what you are selling, you can’t have too many pictures. They should be of the exact item you are selling (stock images always make me wonder what I’m really buying) and be taken in good light.” For more tips on selling your stuff on eBay, click here!

5. Like Greek style yogurt? Consider a D.I.Y. technique!
Uyek says: “Making your own yogurt is so easy … and worthwhile! I make mine periodically in a big bowl in the oven (the pilot light in a gas oven is just warm enough). No special equipment required: pot, thermometer, ‘live’ yogurt for starter, milk, big bowl, warm spot.” Click here to read more about our new obsession.

garden windows without the garden

Monday, March 9th, 2009

There’s seemingly no end to advice on what to put in a garden or greenhouse window or how to create your own — Apartment Therapy just did a roundup, in fact. But I have a different dilemma: our house came with a built-in garden window and frankly, I’m not a fan. I love to garden, but I’m just not good with indoor plants. A garden window to me is just something that needs dusting and, in the wrong spot, can lead to bumped heads outside. But replacing it costs money, something we’re not going to do right now. Currently I’ve turned the window above into a display case, holding a couple retro cookie jars, a few pieces of art glass, and an assortment of bird ornaments on an IKEA tree. In my many online searches, I’ve found precious few ideas on what to do with one of these windows if you don’t want to deal with plants — I found one image (top) of a garden window with a lovely display of blue glass and also a pretty nice holiday display. Do you have any other fun suggestions for the non-garden garden window? –Mary T.

getting the truth about green detergents

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Walking through the cleaning products aisle at the grocery store, I’m constantly faced with new products claiming to be “natural” or “organic.” But what does that really mean? What makes dish soap organic? After reading “When it comes to detergents, what’s the least irresponsible choice?”, an interview with Clive Davies in the new Green Home column in the New York Times, I think I’ve got a better understanding.

Davies is an engineer with the Environmental Protection Agency and the chief of the EPA’s Design for the Environment Program. The program awards a government seal to detergents and cleaners made with chemicals that are deemed less harmful to the environment. While Davies didn’t give me all the answers to my questions, the article gave me a better understanding of what’s on my grocery store shelves, and a new “seal of approval” to keep an eye out for. I suggest you all take a look. –Erica P.
