five things we learned last week

1) You won’t let us lapse in our quest to stay green. When we posted about laptop shades, johnny said: “I’m confused… this seems to go against the shelterrific ethos. It is a very simple design, so why wouldn’t you just make your own? Buying a brand new piece of plastic isn’t very green.” And then judyofthewoods weighed in with a how-to! So, we give: Mary T. will make her own laptop shade, and will share when she does.

2) Follow a Twitter recipe? Maybe not. Lisa says, “There’s something sort of overly technical and…I don’t know…bloodless? about this. I like pretty pictures and helpful descriptions and personal stories.” What do you think?

3) You can teach yourself to become a good traveler. Some of us aren’t good travelers, but others have learned some tricks on traveling lighter, which they share at this post. Our favorite, unfortunately, is from DJ, who says: “I just hope someone can someday invent a functional teleporter… that would really take the stress out of travel.”

4) The rainbow cake is good enough to make more than once. Jen says: “I’ve made it twice. Once the diet version, once just using cake mix & coloring. Both times it was a huge success. In fact, my aunt asked me to make her one for her birthday. The diet cake is a little bland, but if you’re dieting & wanting cake, it’s fabulous. Following normal cake directions, it tastes like cake. You really can’t tell the difference.” Learn more about it here.

5) You can still spot a colorful vintage seatbelt attached to the original car.
Erica P enthused about the seat belt camera straps, and wondered if anyone had seen the color “T-bird Teal” on a car. Well, Paola has. She says: “I saw this T-bird swanning round La Conner, WA last year and I bet it has seat belts that colour! Gorgeous!”
