stamp sets from yellow owl workshop make homemade greeting cards easier

Friday, April 17th, 2009

I have a hard time buying cards from the drugstore — I read through a hundred before I settle on one that I don’t really like, but I’ll just deal with to get myself out of the store. I much prefer to buy the pretty letterpress “artsy” cards from stores like Greenwich Letterpress in NYC. Unfortunately, it seems the more I like a card, the more expensive it is. I’ve been thinking I’d like to buy a stamp or two and some blank notes so I could make my own cards as a cheaper alternative. I love these stamp sets from Yellow Owl Workshop. I had never thought of using multiple stamps to create a scene before now. –Erica P.

in search of the perfect white herringbone bedding

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

I’ve been dreaming of herringbone since catching up on Season One of Pushing Daisies (RIP) and noticing the pattern used throughout their gorgeous and whimsical sets. Since our current quilt is an absolute eyesore in our newly painted bedroom, I’ve been scouring the internet for every single possibility for crisp white herringbone bedding. I’ve come up with a few tempting options, but most of them are way out of our realistic price range. My dream purchase would be this white herringbone matelasse coverlet and sham by Pine Cone Hill, but the coverlet alone is around $200. Another tempting choice is the Los Cabos duvet in herringbone by Ralph Lauren, but it’s even more expensive and would also require the purchase of a comforter for the insert. The most affordable option seems to be this white cotton herringbone blanket from Sferra, but it appears to be out of stock (though I’ve seen it eBay). Does anyone have any suggestions to add? –Megan B.

want it now: glam metallics from rume bags

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Hey, I like carrying my own reusable shopping bags as much as the next tree-hugger. But who says I can’t be glam while I do it? I absolutely love the brand-new Green Label bags from RuMe. This is flash with class — the bags come in shiny metallics (Solid Gold, Purple Rain, and Silver Lining) but each 15.5” x 15.5” x 4” bag is made with signature RuMe durability and consciousness — machine washable, double bound seams, and made at a South Korean Fair Trade Factory. I just may have to find more excuses to go shopping. Available at RuMe for $17.95 each. –Mary T.

cute and kitschy cocktail napkins

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Sometimes your cocktail party accessories scream glamour, sometimes they don’t. I don’t usually pay full price for things like paper napkins, but I made an exception when I saw these 5″ squares by Accoutrements festooned with retro TV dinners. They seem so right for so many occasions — a wedding party, to prepare the happy couple for what’s to come? A TV night with your favorite show? A birthday for someone who might actually remember the ’50s? Despite the unappetizing graphic, responses to them have been universally positive. I found mine in a local stationery store, but you can get some at Kitsch City, $3 for a pack of 20. –Mary T.

real life test kitchen: dungeness crab and asparagus “cocktails”

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

Once spring finally rolls around here in the Northwest, I’m always so ready to rush headlong into light, springy foods, especially anything containing asparagus. So when making the menu for a friend’s engagement party, I came up with this little crab salad. Light, lemony, and filled to the gills with crunchy, juicy asparagus and sweet crab meat, they were the hit of the party. And they looked gorgeous served in my great-grandmother’s vintage martini glasses, garnished with a twist of lemon. –Megan B. Click for the recipe! (more…)

post off: what’s your favorite spring veggie?

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

This post over at Apartment Therapy The Kitchn has me giddy at the thought of my local farmers market’s spring bounty. I cannot wait to buy bags and bags of fresh English peas and enjoy the simple act of shelling them. My mouth is already watering for this amazing pea dish from the fantastic cookbook The Breakaway Cook by Eric Gower. I made it once last spring and have been dreaming about it ever since! What spring vegetable are you most excited about? –Erica P.

if loving these sandwiches is wrong, i don’t wanna be right

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

It’s the sign of the digital times — even cheese makers have a Facebook page. In this case, it’s Tillamook, a farmer-owned cooperative cheese company headquartered in Tillamook, Oregon. I thought I was just expressing my love for the taste when I signed up as a fan, but now they’re sharing fun things with me like this easy recipe for melted cheese sandwiches with rabbit and kitty faces. Too cute! But cute enough to eat. –Mary T.
