what i made for mother’s day, plus a mini gift guide

After years of being at a loss as to what to get the mothers in my life for Mother’s day, I think I’ve finally come up with a winner: I’m making everyone cookbooks with a few favorite family recipes and photos. I could’ve done a cool (yet massive) DIY project, but being pressed for time, I went to Shutterfly, dropped the old pics into a photo book template, and pasted the recipes from my computer. I decided to forgo the preset recipe book designs and opt for a more minimal background. Right now, all of their photo books are 20% off, so I just may order a ton of these as gifts for the entire family. –Megan B. For a few more Mother’s Day gift ideas, click!

For design-savvy moms: a Pantone mug.
This salute to the staple of graphic designers comes in all (or lots of, anyway) the official colors. Pantone mug, $16 each.

For new moms: organic plush pals and more from Mahar Drygoods.
We really like the looks of Monsieur TséTsé, $40, a new pal from Mahar Drygoods. The Monsieur is made from organic cotton “with sweet embroidered facial features and knotted ears — perfect for the teething tot.” Plus, 10% of the profits from each sale are donated to UNICEF. Lots more cool stuff for moms and kids at the Mahar Drygoods site.

For vintage moms: transfer 16mm and 8mm home movies to DVD at Home Movie Depot.
Contributor Bay A. says, “I was the witch in Hansel & Gretel in third grade, and my mother made me my witch outfit. You’d think she’d want another look at that, right?” For the next few days, Home Movie Depot is having a sale — fill a box with movies to transfer for a flat rate of $199. Details here.

For rockin’ moms: the Sony CD/CD-R/RW Boom Box with AM/FM tuner.
Play CDs, hook up the MP3 player, even listen to the radio. My mom asked for a downsized way to play her music this year, and this one gets a top rating from buyers at Best Buy, $90.

For stylish moms: a Sprout bag in Lulu from Angela Adams.
The Lulu design is inspired by beach rocks that line the Maine coast. Each is printed on 100% cotton canvas in three sizes: 18×21-inch Weekend Tote, $145.00; 15×15-inch Mailbag, $85; and 9×9-inch Mini Tote, $45. Save 20% now through May 11 — enter promo code MOM at checkout.

For modern moms: Portomarinica Coffee Cup and Saucer from The Conran Shop.
Made in Spain, the Portomarinica shape is inspired by the corbels (projections jutting out of walls to support structures above them) in the church of San Juan de Portomarin, which was saved from destruction when the river was flooded to made a dam in the 1960s. Portomarinica Coffee Cup and Saucer, $39.

For entertaining moms: Heath Ceramics Summer 09 Four Cup Set.
Part of Heath’s new graphic combinations, the Summer 09 Four Cup Set features two Tall Modern Mugs in Marigold, two Tall Modern Mugs in Hibiscus, and a 9×9-inch tray in Hibiscus, $150.

one of the best christmas gifs from a college once was a cookbook, she printed all sorts of salad recipes in different fonts and then put them in one of those cheap $1 4×6 photo albums. And included the coolest salad forks, serving ones. Adorable idea!

That’s a genius gift. I’ve used Shutterfly a ton and never thought to make a cookbook!
