where’s the best old-house neighborhood near you?

The editors of This Old House think they know. They’ve just put out a list of the coolest neighborhoods of old houses in every state and one in Canada. I’m happy to see that a neighborhood that butts right up against my old haunting grounds in Cincinnati made the cut, and intrigued to see that the coolest old neighborhood in Washington is someplace I’ve never been. The list and lots of photos will be in the issue of This Old House that hits newsstands June 29, but you can get a sneak peek here. And if you’re curious to know if your neighborhood is included? This Old House is wrong. This best old house neighborhood in Montgomery is Old Cloverdale, and I seriously doubt it’s the best in the state. I would probably choose a neighborhood in Eufaula. Capitol Heights has some nice houses, but it is super scary in a lot of areas.
I think it’s more about where it’s most affordable to buy a great old house. College Hill in Cincinnati would have the same issues. I used to live in Northside in Cincinnati, and you could get a huge house for cheap. But yeah, certain streets weren’t so nice.
TOH needs to exand its search. Yes, Temescal is nice (and many more neighborhoods in Oakland are awesome!) but to overlook 75% of Alameda? Victorian and Craftsman Heaven, right across the Estuary!
the estimated population of canada is 33,693,120 and we have ONE neighborhood selected? hilarious.
I’m really puzzled by the fact that there are 50 states, AND Canada, but no Washington DC. Not cool.
I lived near Cincinnati and yes, College Hill, is beautiful but I have since relocated to northeast Ohio. I really think that Cleveland Heights really gives College Hill a run for it’s money. Beautiful homes – some very affordable while others are crazy expensive, but the mix makes for a great neighborhood dynamic. A little suburb in the city!
yet again… dc gets the shaft.
Kansas checking in here. Leavenworth? First of all, that’s a city, not a neighborhood. And second of all, no matter how pretty the houses are, you consider a LOT more than straight-up architecture when you select a home. Like good schools. Proximity to jobs. Accessibility of the stuff that matters to you, whether that’s the symphony or the airport or the sports team or the children’s museum or the variety of restaurants you dig or the arts scene.
When comparing great older-home neighborhoods in the Sunflower State, Leavenworth falls short on just about all those other fronts.
(Of course, I live in College Hill in Wichita, which is a magnificent old neighborhood, so I could be slightly biased.)
