maximum love for minimalist letterpress by bluepoolroad

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

I love the simple designs over at letterpress site bluepoolroad. The eco-chic, minimalist stationary uses clean lines and fresh designs on everything from notepads to tags to custom cards. The genius behind this great store is award winning designer — and former Martha Stewart art director — Peggy Wong. I think my favorite items are the hand-stamped tags and the missing u card. wow: “new vintage” animal prints by chad otis

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

I am just loving Chad Otis’ amazing animal prints. Though they look like vintage food and alcohol advertisements, they’re actually new art that Otis creates featuring his favorite dogs. You can view the hounds, terriers, and labs at Otis’ site, Otis New Vintage, where he’ll soon be adding a poll so you can vote on which breed you’d like to see him paint next. Prints of his existing work are available now at Imagekind, starting at about $19, where a portion of profits benefit the ASPCA. I can’t wait to see what he does next. –Mary T.

bone chillers: an excuse for a party

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

I received this skull and crossbones ice cube tray for my birthday and I’m crazy about it! Most people (of the non-ridiculous variety) would probably tuck it away until Halloween, but I’ve been trying to find any excuse to make wonderfully sinister ice cubes. So far, I’ve already had a “Pirates of the Caribbean” marathon and started my own secret society. Anyone else have any brilliant party suggestions? –Katie D.

kinda genius: “do not lose me” key hook

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

I’m of the opinion that all dwellings should have a landing strip — that counter/table/shelf/nook where you throw your keys and the mail when you walk in the door. If I remember to take my keys out of the door (This isn’t always the case!) then I always know where to find them. I love Hector Serrano’s take on the landing strip. His “do not lose me” key hook design is based on the classic “do not disturb” signs from hotels across the globe. With the addition of just a couple of hooks, this design becomes a genius key caddy. This was definitely a “Why didn’t I think of that?” moment. –Erica P.

tidy up your doodles with graphkin napkins

Monday, July 13th, 2009

I have scribbled more notes, reminders, doodles, and digits on paper napkins then you can possibly imagine. That’s why I fell hard for these Graphkin Napkins as seen at Happy Mundane. I don’t have much of a need for them (I rarely use paper napkins) but I might pick up a packet just because. The set of 12 is designed by Colin O’Dowd and made from recycled paper. Pick them up over at the UK-based Design Museum Shop — and let me know if you find a US source! –Erica P.

five things we learned last week

Monday, July 13th, 2009

1) Daily routines are big or small, but we all have them. Our favorite so far comes from mkhall, who says: “I wake up, lie in bed for a while, check my e-mail via phone, drag myself up, take my handful of pills, put on the coffee, feed the cats, drink my coffee in front of the computer, make sure the world didn’t end, shower et cetera, dress, give the cats instructions for the day, and head out to face the world.” You should really read Marissa’s too, but for that one you’ll just have to click here.

2) Dieffenbachias are easy, but be careful. Erica’s mystery plant is a dieffenbachia, and diana says: “I had one of these for about 6 years — the only plant i’ve never killed! I didn’t do anything but water it occasionally.” But Lynn also warns: “FYI, it’s very poisonous for cats.” Learn more about the plant here and see Erica’s post here.

3) For sales, Cleveland really does rock. Heather saw our post on the DWR Warehouse Sales and said: “OMG – I nearly had a heart attack when I read this. I KNEW I moved to Cleveland for a reason!” Heather, we hope you ate some heart-healthy foods over the weekend and got some good deals.

4) The weirder the cola, the more you like it. Tim says: “The secret all-star to the Fentimans line-up is the Dandelion & Burdock Cola. Delish!!!” Louise agrees: “My favorite is their Dandelion & Burdock cola. Some people don’t like it because they say it tastes like old cough syrup, but that’s why I love it. It has a very herby, medicinal taste.” Well, okay! See the Curiosity Cola here.

5) We love macrame lawn chairs. Megan’s lawn chair find was a major hit, and we are coveting more of these chairs. Kourtney says: “Ooh, my grandparents have a few of these that have a trailer and read, ‘home is where we park it.’ I’m guessing they got them somewhere in the retirement community where they spend the winters in Texas. :) ” See the great comments and ideas on where to find (or how to make) your own fabulous kitschy lawn chairs here.
