Ok, I wanted to get back to you and let you know what I decided on. I went with the Overstock down alternative comforter you recommended, and also with an Overstock Duvet...specifically this one:
http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Egyptian-Cotton-500-Thread-Count-Duvet-Cover-Set/4298238/product.html

Even though the duvet isn't technically machine washable, 3 people commented that they washed theirs and it still works. I decided to do that and go with less expensive, than to go with the slightly more pricey washable one. Maybe I'll regret that but I hope not!

Thank you again!

Thank you all for your suggestions! Shelterrific is magic ;-)

I will let you know what I end up with. I also did an internet search and apparently some people like having microfiber comforters as they don't really hold onto pet hair. I couldn't find one that I liked or could afford though, so I may be headed to ikea this weekend (or just Overstock!)

I'd also suggest a duvet cover over a comforter. Ikea has a great selection of easy to remove and throw in the wash options.

I feel like I have been seeing bedspreads lately, where my former experience with them was limited to my great grandmother's house, and now I can't think of where.
However, I have noticed in a few nice hotels lately, that they have just been using really crisp giant, heavy, untucked sheets to create a clean line covering pillows and all bedding. Maybe some of the heavier wrinkle-free variety? Or something with weighted corners?

I got a sheet that coordinated with my bedding and just throw it over the bed right after dinner (before the kitties' bed time). I've also done what Christine suggested and that works pretty well too.

Consider a do-it-yourself duvet. Washing the cover is a whole lot easier than washing the comforter itself. You can make one easily from sheets with minimal sewing.
