mail order delight: john & kira’s chocolates

johnkirasfigsWhen it comes to chocolate, I’m an equal opportunity consumer. I’ll eat it, love it, and justify eating more, every time. But when I find something really special, I have to share it. This week, that something is the community-minded chocolate ganache from John & Kira’s Chocolates. The Philadelphia-based company specializes in artisan chocolate handmade with ingredients sourced from local and family farms. Their signature ganache squares come in unique flavors including bergamot, star anise, lavender honey, and lemongrass. However, my current fave is Garden Mint, with mint they receive through Project Mintpatch, an urban gardening initiative they launched to help children learn more about local farming and business. Items from their Ladybugs & Bee collection might make a cute, alternative Valentine’s Day gift, and I know a few people here at Shelterrific who might fancy a drunken chocolate fig or four. I adore John & Kira’s! I first received the bumblebees and ladybugs as a gift, and savored every bite. Then, this Christmas, I received those figs, and holy moly, they are DECADENT. Incredible.

Incidentally, J&K also has great customer service. My s.o. sent a lovely large assortment to his Mom for her summer birthday, and even though the packaging specifically instructed UPS not to leave it at the door, the carrier did. The chocolates were ok – melty, but still delicious – and my s.o.’s Mom called J&K’s just to let them know their instructions hadn’t been followed, and that the chocolates were yum anyway. They sent her a new box anyway! Great company.

Mmmm, as a Philly native living in L.A., I received a box of these fab chocolates for Christmas last year. The Garden Mint is truly devine and my second fave was the lemongrass. Thanks for sharing a Philadelphia favorite with the whole web!
