welcomebackpolaroid

All I have to say is, HALLELUJAH! I saw the good news over on The World’s Best Ever and wanted to share it with you all:

“The brand is back with plans to re-release the old instant film cameras and the iconic Color 600 instant film. Here’s a look at the new Polaroid PIC 1000, which is scheduled to be released later this year. The new camera should cost less than USD $100.”

Welcome back, Polaroid! Welcome back! — Erica P.

five things we learned last week

fivethingsglowingupclose

1) Cake stencils aren’t easy for everyone. Pencils says: “Am I the only one who can frost a cake but is terrible at cake stencils? Is there some kind of trick to it I’m missing? I lift the thing and it’s a big smudgy mess. Do I use too much sugar?” If you have any advice for Pencils, please share it here.

2) Megan’s not the only one who wants that CB2 bedding. Kelly says: “Ahhhhhhhhhh! I have been looking at this duvet EVERY day online. I am so tempted to buy it!” While Danielle says: “This bedding is incredible, it is making me want to redecorate my bedroom….” See it here.

3) Simple black and white has fans, too. Better than naked says: “what amazing shots! The texture really comes thru. nice picks!” about Sarah L’s recent Etsy purchases. We like them, too.

4) You’re ready for a redesigned boarding pass. Ellobie says: “Tyler’s making a very valid point! Even if airlines used a grayscale theme to save on printing costs, this boarding pass seems much better all around!” See Tyler Thompson’s boarding pass redesign.

5) Broccoli romanesco wows you, too. Perhaps Ellobie says it best: “Whoa!” Angela M. also weighs in: “OMG. that would be an amazing centerpiece!” Broccoli romanesco tastes good, too. (If you want more cooking ideas, also check out what Megan and HollowSquirrel say in comments.)

steal this idea: embroidered headboard

embroideredheadboard
Wrought iron headboards are gorgeous, elegant, and all types of uncomfortable. I love the look of them, but nothing beats a comfy padded headboard to lean against at the end of the day. This embroidered “iron” headboard, conceived by Lydia Lee, is the best of both worlds — and a moderately easy craft for all the DIY-ers out there. Find the tutorial at Design Sponge. — Katie D.

and more moustaches

moustacheonastick

Moustaches as a design trend — tired of them? Still like them? They show no signs of going away. If you’d like some help embroidering your own, Sublime Stitching diva Jenny Hart has provided a free downloadable pattern so you can add a moustache to your own crafty designs. Another one that was new to me was Chocolate Moustache on a Stick, $15, by Neopolitan Printing & Co., yet another find at Crafty Wonderland. So if you’re ambivalent about the trend, you can enjoy it for a few minutes, and then it’s all gone. What will the next big trend in crafty facial hair be?

strangely appealing: lawn flamingo chandelier

Just before Christmas, we took a trip to Portland’s Crafty Wonderland, where I wanted pretty much everything I laid eyes on, but especially loved this chandelier by Bindle Art & Design. It’s made from Don Featherstone pink flamingos (the classic design, basically) and ingenuity, and was deemed worthy of a feature on The Antonio Project. Want one? You can order your own Lawn Flamingo Chandelier, $350, from Bindle Designs’ Etsy Shop. I also love the Lawn Flamingo Wall Sconce, $50 — so very wacky-1960s-TV-show. — Mary T.

making a cake? make cake stencils

cake_stencils
I spend just as much time flipping through wedding cake portfolios at bakeries as I do Vogues at the hair salon. I’d love to make my own masterpieces, but I have neither the skills nor the equipment — mine are more Cake Wrecks than Cake Boss. That’s why I like cake stencils, a foolproof way to decorate without steady hands, a drawer full of piping tips, or years of experience! Bonus: a lightly sugared topping is a nice antidote to a heaviness of a slathered-with-frosting cake. Martha Stewart makes a beautiful set. But if you’d rather give cake stencils a try for free, check out this this Canadian Living article — it has downloadable templates so that you can make your own. — Katie D.

want it all now: cb2’s new spring catalog

gionlinens
fullroom

I’ve never wanted a room in my home to look just like a catalog — that is, until I spotted this room in the new CB2 spring collection. I was taken first by the gorgeous Gion organic bed linens, which look as if they were custom made for my bedroom’s color palate. Then I noticed the andes platform bed and immediately fell into some serious bed lust. the built-in side tables would be the ideal solution for our cozy sleeping space. Heck, I want it all — the sconces are great, too. Now I know where a good chunk of my tax return is going, so I’d better file soon! — Megan B.

real life test kitchen: broccoli romanesco with maitake mushrooms and chicken

florettines

Simple is best, apparently. We were more than happy to take the advice of Mike Osborn at Sosio’s Produce, where we bought our broccoli romanesco, and cook it up simply as follows. We did add maitake mushrooms (my husband’s favorite) and sliced chicken breast, but this would be an easy recipe to take veg — in fact, maitakes are also known as “hen of the woods” for their flavor. The real star was, of course, the broccoli romanesco, which turned out perfectly tender, with a sort of hybrid cauliflower/broccoli taste, only sweeter, and with the best textures of both. A note that if you plan to make the veggies the main dish, I recommend doubling the recipe — this was so tasty, we could have eaten double the veggies even as part of a larger meal. — Mary T. darkhedges
sheep
A few months ago, I started looking for black and white photography to break up the chaotic color jumble that is our bookshelves. It was by happy accident that I discovered both the The Dark Hedges by Zoetrope Design and Sheep with Backup Singers by Rocky Top Studio — I love the way the two look together. Now all I need to do is let go of a few books. (You can find more images of Ireland at Zoetrope Designs and more wildlife prints at Rocky Top Studios.) — Sarah L.
