Of all the re-imaginings of the Windsor chair since it first appeared in 17th century English gardens, my favorites are the American versions with splayed legs and comb-backs (Philadelphia) or continuous arms (New York). Admittedly, those forms are both from the 18th century but there have been plenty of versions in years since that are more liberal while still retaining the Windsor’s solid seat and anchored legs and back. Clockwise from top left, Christopher Specce Windsor, George Ainley Windsor, Ercol Retro Elm Windsor circa 1960 and Richard Shultz’s Fresh Air chair. If you’re looking for additional modern takes, you’ll also find Ikea’s version of a fanback Windsor and the Hive Modern Straight Chair. — Sarah L.
