simple holiday décor that’s anything but cookie cutter

Ever since I saw an interior designer I know place a tin pig cookie cutter on top of a bulletin board as a whimsical wall decoration, I have looked for opportunities to steal the idea. (Thanks for the additional Flickr inspiration Interiors by Ivy, Purple house on pearl, Harthill south and Inspired by everything!) So, with cookie-making season upon us, I am looking for cutters that can double as décor, such as this Crate & Barrel autumn-themed set, this adorable vintage gingerbread couple and this sweet 3” sheep for $1. It’s not just a frugal idea, it’s also a yummy one! –Ginny F.

I have two small Dala horse cookie cutters included with my window decoration of Dala horses*, and an acorn cookiecutter as part of my kitchen decoration. I love the way they are “outlines” of an image.

Have you seen the Ikea cookie cutters?

That’s a great idea. I especially like the Hartfill south one with the cookie cutters nested together next to the slate tile. It’d also be fun to give someone a batch of cookies for the holidays, put in a little box, and wrap with baker’s string and a small cookie cutter.

Alison, I have a collection of dala horses myself! Love your window display of them! I may have to copy you. :) And thanks for the IKEA recommendations. Those are now at the top of my list!

Andrea, the “cookie cutter tag” idea is great. It’s a good reason to go out and buy more cookie cutters, too!

I’ve inherited quite an extensive collection of cookie cutters over the years. Make sure to check IKEA around Christmas time. My very favorite cookie cutters have come from there! (from moose to squirrel, they come in boxed sets for under $5!)

Just a bit off topic, but Ginny, if you collect Dala horses, have you seen the Dala horse cake pans that are also at Ikea?

Sometimes, if I want a particular cookie cutter and can’t find one, I take a simple shape and re-bend it into what I want. One time I really wanted a small simple house outline to make cookies for a friends housewarming, so reshaped something else (carefully, using small pliers and my fingers) and it turned out really just right.

I love my dala horse cake pan! (And the mini one). :)
