bedding basics: down comforter or blanket?

I don’t buy bedding often, but when I do there are two truths I expect to take place the second I pull the trigger on a new look. First, the instant my credit card is charged for the purchase, the item will become available in a snazzy new color that I will undoubtedly love (hello, steel blue!). And second, that I will change my bedding aesthetic just as opinion shifts in the opposite direction. (Having an item the item I bought at full price go on sale would be the third part of the buyer’s remorse trifecta, but I digress). I am very pleased with my most recent acquisition, but like clockwork, just as I’ve signed on to the fluffy, disheveled duvet trend I stumble upon this Wall Street Journal article in which Sara Ruffin Costello makes the case for a switch back to the clean, sleek look of blankets and coverlets. While I love my new duvet, I do agree that I sometimes feel like I’m sleeping in a wood-burning oven, and I also like the color and texture coordination options that layering blankets offers. What do you think, readers? Do you prefer duvets or blankets on your dream bed?

I use both!
In the summer I use a coverlet and in the winter I have a down blanket and duvet cover. We have one coverlet and two duvets but when we move I hope to have multiple options for both. This way I can get good sale items at the end of the season and switch them up during washing times (or when I inevitably get sick of them).
I am generally cold so I also keep an extra blanket on the bed year-round. It looks nice folded at the foot of the bed.
I’m all about the bedspreads/coverlets/blankets. Down is just TOO HARD TO CLEAN. Especially with accident-prone pets.
Both!
I admit the feather comforter is not as easy to clean, especially with “accident prone pets,” (Megan you said it all!) but I wash the duvet frequently. I use the blankets/ light quilts in the warmer months and the feathers in the winter.
I need a thick bedding at all times be it summer or winter…I feel really cold most of the time…That way it’s really cosy…

I, who live in a house with no insulation, vote: DOWN – all year round. When I finally bought the down comforter (which is so much lighter than blankets), my sleep improved a great deal.
i spent a miserable week at a W hotel years ago before i figured out i was allergic to down and had the pillows and duvet swapped out. blankets all the way!
After too many years of making too many beds – mine, other peoples, hospitals’ – it is duvets all the way, baby! No more layers and layers and layers, and hospital corners, and turned edges for me ever, ever again.
