what’s your most romantic and creative gift ever?

Nothing can top what you see in the photo. You see, I have a pretty big thing for French Bulldogs, and I’ve been wanting one forever. But our crazy work schedules and two needy cats just don’t have room for a dog yet. So, my husband surprised me with a custom painting of my favorite Frenchie ever (who was later the ring bearer at our wedding, BTW) instead. We were lucky enough to have a talented friend who could do something cool — with my favorite flowers, and lots of imagery significant to our relationship in some way. If you’re thinking about doing something similar, you’ve still got time. Take a favorite photo and have it printed on a canvas, or if you’re talented (unlike yours truly), create a special artwork of your own. It’s probably going to be impossible, but at some point, I’d like to try and give my husband a gift that’s just as amazingly cool, unique and romantic as my painting — and that’s where you come in. What trinket did you receive that knocked you off your feet? Did you surprise your paramour with something super-cool and unique? I’m sure I’m not the only one who could use a little creative inspiration… — Megan B.

i’ve made custom ABC books before … they take a little time but are worth it. For example, “C is for Chicago, where we met on a plane, and if not for that day, things would not be the same!” then added a picture of chicago …

apple.com and kodak.com both have book publishing options that are really nice too!

Megan, I have so much more love for that painting now. And Pudge!!! What a charmer!

When I was first dating my husband, he stressed and stressed over what to give me for Christmas. He ended up making me a necklace (my husband now designs jewelry http://www.etsy.com/shop/davesheelydesigns but didn’t back then) that featured a bead he’d made years ago. It was so beautiful, it made me cry. And moreso because he’d put so much effort into it.

I used some designs from http://www.sublimestitching.com/ and embroidered him a Christmas stocking!

My first valentine’s day with my now fiancée was 8 years ago when Amelie had recently come out. It was, and still is, one of my favorites. Austin surprised me by recreating some of the scenes from the movie: ripped up pictures, signs in French, roasted chicken and creme brule. It was sweet, touching and romantic!

clean house and kids. what can i say? my needs have changed : ) but i absolutely adore your gift.

I used Blurb to create a hard bound self published compilation of all of my fiance and my favorite foods to cook together. I also looked up and/or spent the summer recreating our favorites from local restaurants before we moved and included them. Each page has a story of what makes the dish special for us listed under the instructions and there are great photos of us and the dog. He loved it!

Jess- how great! I could totally do something like that: I’ve got a cache of recipes! Thanks for sharing!

@ Sarah: I understand. Honestly, lately, I’ve been swooning when my husband washes dishes unprompted and brings me home salted caramel ice cream. Sometimes it’s the little things…
