site we’re psyched about: heartsy

heartsy

It’s almost too good to be true: a Groupon-style discount site for Etsy, where sellers offer deep discounts on handmade items that people buy and later redeem. But, thankfully, it’s real. Heartsy is a site that does just that: offering a limited amount of discounts people buy for handmade Etsy items like soaps, artwork and textiles. New deals are offered daily, so it’s best to sign up for emails so you don’t miss out on something awesome — and you can even help decide what’s discounted next, so get on over and start browsing! — Megan B.

I have to say that this post saddens me terribly.

I am already saddened by the economic and social impact of sites like Groupon and Living Social and similar discount site. It’s made “50% off” the new retail price. It’s taken the Walmart discount mentality and made it seem cool. It’s not cool. And that isn’t economically sustainable for our local businesses, let alone crafters and artists who are already struggling to make a living selling their wares.

I say if you love the local businesses in your area, support them by patronizing them at realistic prices. If you love handmade and unique items, support their creation by paying a fair price for them.

I personally have unsubscribed from all coupon sites that I originally signed up for. I don’t need a constant daily deluge of “super deals” and things to buy that I don’t really need. The buy now, buy cheap, act fast mentality is in exact opposition of my desire to support local business and artists, makers and creators.

I say BOO to Heartsy.
