post off: what’s your go-to recipe?

Ever since seeing it in an issue of Glamour, I’ve been intrigued by the notion of Engagement Chicken, the simple roast chicken recipe that’s credited with bringing forth the engagements of more than 60 women in addition to many Glamour staffers after they prepared the dish for the men they love. Though I haven’t dabbled in this exact breed of culinary witchcraft, it did get me thinking about the value of having a go-to, signature recipe. For me, right now that recipe is baked oatmeal. What about you, readers? Do you have a signature dish that a significant other or friend asks for by name? — Sarah C.

I have a signature dish but I can’t take too much credit for it! To most get-togethers I bring sliced pretzels from Cincinnati-based bakery Servatti’s along with some of their signature bistro sauce. It’s always a hit and people love it so much they don’t give me a hard time for not cooking anything. Can it be your signature dish if you don’t actually cook it?
I LOVE your baked oatmeal. I make it all winter long.
Another of my go to recipes for breakfast are these banana bread muffins.
I think they’re the best.

Try them!

Pesto on Capellini with grilled chicken (just use the packet if you’re out of basil)

Betty Crocker’s Quiche for make-ahead
I do not, but when I was growing up in the 80s my mom always made homemade spaghetti sauce and meatballs when we would have company. They always raved about it, and it was so simple. Except the part where someone had to squish up the meatball ingredients and roll the balls by hand. Ew.
My husband makes lemon cheesecake squares from Cooks Illustrated that are amazing. When I’m asked to bring something for meetings, women’s groups, etc. they always ask if I can bring his lemon squares (which works out well for me since he has to make them). I’ve even gotten emails for potlucks with our contribution already filled in for us.
Slow-cooker lasagna! I found it on http://www.allrecipes.com. All you cook on the stovetop is the sausage. After that, you just layer (using no-cook noodles) and let it go! Tastes fantastic!
Farfalle with mascarpone, cremini mushrooms and roasted walnuts. It’s a Giada recipe that i adapt a bit, with vegetable stock, maybe a few more vegetables and sometimes some ricotta. It looks a lot more impressive than it really is, and it pleases vegetarians and carnivores alike!
Well, I really can’t ever lose with my mom’s carrot cake…
Though all I make for people are red velvet cupcakes and my newest obsession: fruit-filled scones (tonight’s batch: yard-picked blackberry)!
Guacamole!
Meatloaf–made it last night, even though it was too hot out. Gingerbread, which I love and make all the time in cooler weather. The cake kind, not the Gingerbread Man kind. And pie. I make a pretty good pie, if I say so myself, and my husband is a big fan. In fact, I seem to have promised to make an apple pie this weekend.
