ikea makes a nursery for our guys: do they want one?

Perhaps it is some recessed Paleolithic gene, but men just don’t enjoy shopping in the same way that women do. Any gal who has tried to maneuver her man through a crowded Nordstrom knows that he does not have the same patience for trying on clothes and waiting in line as she does. Ikea, forever determined to be a lifestyle leader, is attempting to address the conundrum with a new designated area for dudes, called Manland (see this story in news.com.au for more details). Currently available only in Europe now, it is outfitted with foosball tables, video games and free hotdogs. Though my husband, Chad, rather enjoys our strolls through Ikea and a good debate about lighting, I could imagine this being helpful. Now, if we could place one of them in H&M, that’d be special. — Angela M.

Do your guys like shopping as much as you do? Let me know!

My girlfriend wants me to go to Ikea with her soon. The whole point is to look for home stuff together. I’d love just to hang out in the man bit but that would defeat the purpose of us going

Love that. An Ikea date is my idea of fun. Especially if a plate of Swedish meatballs are included. Didn’t I see that in a movie recently?

I have the opposite problem–my bf likes shopping way more than I do. He likes food shopping the best but clothes or shoe shopping are not a problem either. It’s really great because he’s a terrific shopping companion but sometimes he’s still going strong and I just want to go home. I’d probably be the lone woman sitting in the Man Nursery.

this is asinine. half the time i’ve been the one to initiate the “ikea run.” and given how long a shopping trip to ikea can run, a guy would be better off at home lounging rather than doing it on display furniture in a store.

also, i’d be willing to be that the place very quickly fills up with cranky OLD guys dragged their by their wives who will quickly make man land look like a swedish-designed nursing home lounge.

I kinda get this. At least around me, ikeas are pretty sparse – going to visit one is definitely a ‘destination’ trip that will likely take most of a day, and maybe even an overnight. Activities for people who might be worth bringing on a long trip, but who don’t enjoy shopping, and wouldn’t necessarily have anywhere else to go during that time isn’t a terrible idea.

Though, I think in europe, they’re much more ubiquitous, so I don’t really see the point there – if someone doesn’t want to go with you to the shop 20 minutes away, just leave them home.

However, the real draw for a man-playpen would be lots of large t.v.’s showing sporting events. They completely missed the boat there.

My boyfriend likes to shop too. Of course there are things he would prefer to shop for more. But, we have and understanding that if I go with him and oooo and ahhhh over different knives and guns. Then he has to come into every weird little hippy, girlie, and otherwise not so pleasant for him store that I go into. But, then there are the stores we both enjoy and we both don’t feel like it’s a drag. Video game stores, Hot Topic, and Spencers. The one store my man will not go into with me is the local New Age store. He is certain that the ghosts of Witches past run through the isles of that store. Even though he is looking for a silver knife he won’t go into that store! Lol

Sounds like LLoyd is “whipped”!

Sounds like Riye’s boyfriend is gay!

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

I love it, but that is going to be overrun by 10-14yo boys every second of every day. (OK, maybe not during school hours.)
