steal this idea: happytape “wallpaper”

happytapewall

Happytape is taking over! Sarah L. noticed the latest at Little Green Notebook: Happytape used as temporary Harlequin “wallpaper”. A great idea for renters, and it probably takes less patience to do up a wall this way than to actually paint it. Get the how-to here.

tape that makes us happy: japanese masking tape

papertape
From the country that brought us Harajuku style, anime, and Maru comes this super kawaii (cute) innovation: Japanese Happytape, now available in the United States and making its brightly colored presence known around the blogosphere. Made from washi paper, Happytape has a million uses besides making me smile. Seriously — there’s an entire blog full of projects for inspiration. The tapes are perfect for low-impact crafts such as gift wrapping, card making, scrapbooking, and just making anything a little less mundane. — Katie D.

more target art: donna k’s lightboxes

Two weeks ago, Erica asked for suggestions on how to display the target her boyfriend brought home from the shooting range. When Donna K posted a link to a lightbox she’d made from a similar target, we wanted to see more. The lightboxes you see here are completely her creations.

Donna says:

The lightboxes are made out of plywood that I cut and hammered together to make a box with one open side. (I stained the box to make it look nicer/match the decor of where it’ll end up.) I wired a socket to some wire which I ran through a hole I drilled in the top of the box, and then ran the wire to a plug. I used brass thumbtacks to put the target on the box because I like to change them out, but gluing it down would probably have better results! I was thinking of ways to make it easier and came up with using an already-existing box that you take the front off of, and then use those lamp kits they sell at the hardware store for the guts.

Donna, we love these lightboxes! And if you’re not up to constructing your own wooden box, try IKEA — we’ve seen wooden storage containers and drawers similar to these used as lightboxes at craft shows. steal this idea: embroidered headboard

embroideredheadboard
Wrought iron headboards are gorgeous, elegant, and all types of uncomfortable. I love the look of them, but nothing beats a comfy padded headboard to lean against at the end of the day. This embroidered “iron” headboard, conceived by Lydia Lee, is the best of both worlds — and a moderately easy craft for all the DIY-ers out there. Find the tutorial at Design Sponge. — Katie D.

and more moustaches

Moustaches as a design trend — tired of them? Still like them? They show no signs of going away. If you’d like some help embroidering your own, Sublime Stitching diva Jenny Hart has provided a free downloadable pattern so you can add a moustache to your own crafty designs. Another one that was new to me was Chocolate Moustache on a Stick, $15, by Neopolitan Printing & Co., yet another find at Crafty Wonderland. So if you’re ambivalent about the trend, you can enjoy it for a few minutes, and then it’s all gone. What will the next big trend in crafty facial hair be?

strangely appealing: lawn flamingo chandelier

Just before Christmas, we took a trip to Portland’s Crafty Wonderland, where I wanted pretty much everything I laid eyes on, but especially loved this chandelier by Bindle Art & Design. It’s made from Don Featherstone pink flamingos (the classic design, basically) and ingenuity, and was deemed worthy of a feature on The Antonio Project. Want one? You can order your own Lawn Flamingo Chandelier, $350, from Bindle Designs’ Etsy Shop. I also love the Lawn Flamingo Wall Sconce, $50 — so very wacky-1960s-TV-show. — Mary T.

making a cake? make cake stencils

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

cake_stencils
I spend just as much time flipping through wedding cake portfolios at bakeries as I do Vogues at the hair salon. I’d love to make my own masterpieces, but I have neither the skills nor the equipment — mine are more Cake Wrecks than Cake Boss. That’s why I like cake stencils, a foolproof way to decorate without steady hands, a drawer full of piping tips, or years of experience! Bonus: a lightly sugared topping is a nice antidote to a heaviness of a slathered-with-frosting cake. Martha Stewart makes a beautiful set. But if you’d rather give cake stencils a try for free, check out this this Canadian Living article — it has downloadable templates so that you can make your own. — Katie D.

help! what should we do with this target?

My boyfriend and his friend went to a shooting range last week when we were in Vegas. Seeing as how I have zero interest in guns, I chose to skip the outing and go shopping instead. He came home from his field trip happy as a clam with a couple of cell phone videos and this souvenir. I’m not sure why, but I totally dig it. I’m convinced it will make a cool piece of art for our apartment, but I haven’t figured out just what to do with it. Should we add some color and splatter paint it? Should we cut it up and rearrange the pieces? What about a collage of sorts? This weekend I’m going to get creative and make something of it, but I’d love some inspiration before I get started. Any suggestions? — Erica P.

want it now: felted soap

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

fiatluxe

Typical situation: I walked into Anthropologie yesterday and saw something for the “love” list. This week’s obsession? Felted soap. Handmade in the USA by Fiat Luxe, these adorable little soaps double as sudsy (and anti-fungal!) washcloths that can be reused when the original scented soap has magically disappeared. Made with no synthetic, chemical, nor animal ingredients, they may be the perfect thing for that weary post-holiday shopper: you! You can find Fiat Luxe Felted Soap for $14 at Anthropologie, Beautyhabit, or Amazon.com. Or if you prefer to let your wallet sleep in, see simple soap felting DIY instructions here and here. — Sarah C.

creativity for kids: magical menagerie

menageriecover
When I was a child, I took an origami class and emerged from it with nothing but paper cuts. I thought my paper crafting days were over until I spotted these bright cardboard critters sitting pretty at a local letterpress shop. Created by artist Junzo Terada, Magical Menagerie, $24.95 from Chronicle Books, is book of 20 punch-out animal sculptures that are constructed by simply fitting the matching slotted pieces together — no scissors, glue, or ornate folding required. The colorful creatures look great on display, and make for a fun activity or unconventional card. — Sarah C.
