<p>It&#8217;s not very often that we write about fashion here on Shelterrific, but this insanely adorable <a href="http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=24103277&#038;catId=CLOTHES-BLOUSES&#038;pushId=CLOTHES-BLOUSES&#038;popId=CLOTHES&#038;navCount=14&#038;color=066&#038;isProduct=true&#038;fromCategoryPage=true&#038;isSubcategory=true&#038;subCategoryId=CLOTHES-BLOUSES&#038;templateType=subCategory"target="_blank">top from Anthropologie</a> lets us wear our domestic hearts on our sleeves &#8211; and tummies and backs! A silk-screened image by photographer Sarah Ball (we couldn&#8217;t find any additional info on her so let us know if you have some to share!), it features a delightful pink cottage on its front and back. Match it with a pair of jeans and kelly green cardigan and you&#8217;ve got an outfit worthy of any weekend getaway. Now, all we need is a little cottage to visit! A little pricey at $188, we&#8217;ll keep on eye on the sales racks for this one. Swoon, swoon. </p>

<description><![CDATA[When we bought our house about a two years ago, it was nearly perfect. ... ]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.shelterrific.com/2012/02/07/help-dishwasher-novice-needs-advice/dishwasher2_580" rel="attachment wp-att-30700"><img src="/media/2012/02/dishwasher2_580.jpg" alt="" title="dishwasher2_580" width="580" height="708" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-30700" /></a></p>
<p>When we bought our house about a two years ago, it was nearly perfect. Porch, backyard, short walk to the train. Coming from a small apartment meant we had stars in our eyes at thought of a things like an attic, garage and a basement. Storage galore. We were smitten. So smitten we casually overlooked that the kitchen didn&#8217;t have a dishwasher. I had lived 40 years without one, surely I could go a little longer, I thought. However, once we moved in my inner baker and closeted hostess-with-the-mostest personality came out. I cook at least three times a week and we have guests over several times a month. Suddenly, the no dishwasher thing was getting to be a real drag.</p>
<p>We called in a kitchen contractor type and were dismayed to learn that slipping in a dishwasher was not going to be an easy task. Our cabinets were all custom-sized, and the nice stone counter top could break if they tried to lift it up. There was some extra space in the corner of the kitchen, were we had placed a small bistro table. It was nice to have a table in the kitchen, but honestly we never used it. Our solution became clear: Extend the counter with butcher block (so we didn&#8217;t have to worry about matching the stone counter) and put the dishwasher there. There&#8217;d even be room for a stool, if we wanted to tuck one under.</p>
<p>A few weeks later, and voila! I can&#8217;t believe how much I am in love with our new appliance. We picked a <a href="http://www.us-appliance.com/she43r55uc.html" target="_blank">Bosch</a> &#8212; not the most expensive model, but a nice one that hums quietly when it&#8217;s on. It also has a pretty red light that beams on the floor so we know when it&#8217;s in use. Unlike dishwashers of my youth, this one does not have a drying cycle. I suppose it is to save energy, but if you open it up too soon things will definitely be too wet.</p>
<p>Now I am trying to learn the tricks of good dish loading. How dirty can things be when I put them? How closely can I pack things together? I definitely have noticed a few butter knifes that still look dirty after a cycle, and if we put the plates too close together, the backs will stay gunky.</p>
<p>Got any good dishwasher advice to share with me? I&#8217;d love tips on loading. What does your dishwasher clean that surprises you? What do you never put in there? As always, your shared wisdom is deeply appreciated! &#8212; Angela M.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://www.shelterrific.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/cupcake.jpg" alt="cupcake" title="cupcake" width="443" height="673" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-26770" /></p>
<p>Hello dear readers! It&#8217;s Monday afternoon, and though I am a little more sleepy than usual I didn&#8217;t want to wait a moment longer before introducing you to our new puppy, Cupcake. (Yes, our four-year old daughter picked out his name.) We picked him up from the breeder on Saturday, and spent about an hour there playing with him and his siblings, and getting some last minute tips on puppy care. It really helped to see where he was coming from. The house was big and warm and cozy &#8212; a puppy paradise, really.</p>
<p>We brought him home via a four hour drive that went surprising well. The little guy mostly snoozed contently the whole way. As soon as we got home, he promptly set about exploring his new place. It took him about five minutes before he found a spot to poop. Luckily, it was on the hard floor and was easy to clean up. We spent most of the night laughing and playing, amazed that he was already so good fetching; all those squeaky toys really are actually a ton of fun! The first night in the crate was not so bad. He fell asleep after about ten minutes and only woke up once around 2 am. After a quick, cold visit to the backyard, he went back to sleep until dawn. I thought, this is easy&#8230; </p>
<p>That was until last night, which seemed much harder than the first. Perhaps it was finally sinking in that his brothers and sisters were not going to show up? What ever was going on in that little walnut of a brain, Cupcake would not quiet down. After about 20 minutes of unsuccessfully trying to lure him to sleep, we decided to move the crate downstairs. Bad idea. He cried all night! Well, at least until around 2:30 a.m. when I took him outside (burrrrr &#8212; when did it suddenly get so cold here?!) and then moved the crate back up to our room. I got him to go to sleep by literally sliding it as close to our bed possible and then sticking my fingers in the crate. Not exactly comfortable for me, but it worked! We&#8217;ll try that again tonight. My plan is make sure we wear him out with lots of play before we put him in the crate to sleep. </p>
<p>People keep telling me that dogs learn to love being in their crates but it&#8217;s hard to imagine. From the wails he made last night you would think we were torturing him. Please tell me it gets easier! &#8212; Angela M. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-26364" title="organicsheets" src="http://www.shelterrific.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/organicsheets.jpg" alt="organicsheets" width="443" height="361" /></p>
<p>Organic fabrics can be tricky business. Sure, they&#8217;re processed without chemicals, and the cotton is grown without pesticides. But the results can be fabrics that are either paper thin or burlap thick, with a texture to match. When I set out to find a pair of organic sheets, I knew I had my work cut out for me, but the idea of not having all of those chemicals rubbing around on me while I sleep was appealing, even to a girl as un-environmentally friendly as me.</p>
<p>After spending way too much time researching the best options, I settled on <a href="http://www.charlesprogers.com/organic-cotton-sheets-p-521.html?cPath=3_17" target="_blank">a set from Charles P. Rogers</a>, and they&#8217;ve completely changed my opinion of organic cotton. These beautiful sheets are soft and luxurious, with just the right amount of thickness to keep you warm, but thin enough to drape well and not wrinkle too terribly. They wash beautifully, and the fitted sheet actually holds on to the corners of my gigantic mattress. At $140 for a Queen set, they&#8217;re not the cheapest option on the block, but in the world of organics, it&#8217;s actually very reasonable. And a good set of sheets is one of those investments whose value can&#8217;t be quantified &#8211; there&#8217;s just nothing like it.</p>
<p>Next thing you know, I might even insist on organic cotton tees! Well, maybe not quite yet. &#8211;Becki S.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-26206" title="buckeyes" src="http://www.shelterrific.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/buckeyes.jpg" alt="buckeyes" width="443" height="417" /></p>
<p>One of the best things about marrying a man from Ohio is that he introduced me to buckeyes. The state sweet, they are creamy, peanut-buttery chocolate balls of joy. They resemble the nut that falls from <a href="http://www.ohiodnr.com/tabid/5107/default.aspx">the state tree</a> and bear the same name as Ohio State&#8217;s beloved <a href="http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/">college football team</a>. I don&#8217;t know how I lived 35 years without them. Recently, we introduced some neighbors to buckeyes by bringing <a href="http://www.ivillage.com/monster-eyeballs/3-r-61093">a spooky version</a> to Halloween party. I was talking to the hostess when someone came over and urgently asked &#8220;Where are those chocolate peanut butter balls?! They are amazing!!&#8221; I beamed with pride and decided we&#8217;d make them for a bake sale we had coming up at our child&#8217;s preschool. Recipe to follow on the next page. Don&#8217;t eat them all once! &#8212; Angela M</p>
<p><span id="more-26196"></span><br />
How to make Buckeyes<br />
Start with the peanut butter middle: Mix one stick of room temperature butter, with a pound of confectioner&#8217;s sugar (never said these were healthy!), a cup and a half of creamy peanut butter and a two teaspoons of vanilla. Mix together (use your hands) until it&#8217;s well blended and easy to shape. Roll out tablespoon-sized balls and place on wax paper lined cookie sheet. Chill in fridge for one hour.<br />
Then, make the chocolate dip: Melt a bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips with two tablespoons of vegetable shortening. I used a double-boiler (glass bowl over a pan of simmering water) but the microwave would work, too.<br />
Pick up the peanut butter balls with a toothpick and place in the chocolate, leaving a small round opening on the top. Place back on sheet. When all are done, smooth over the toothpick holes with your finger (you may need a little water). Chill again. Eat when you can&#8217;t wait any longer.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m always remarking how much safer I felt living in the city rather than the &#8216;burbs. On dark and stormy nights, I miss being in close proximity of other apartment dwellers and having only one point of entry into our home. I also miss sleeping in a 12-story brick building that I know can&#8217;t be toppled by a falling tree. This weekend we were figuratively blown away by <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/31/nyregion/october-snowstorm-sows-havoc-on-northeastern-states.html?pagewanted=all"target="_ blank">an extremely rare October snow storm</a>. It was cold, wet and dangerous: The still-green leaves clung to tree branches, catching the damp heavy clumps as they fell from the sky, adding tons of weight to branches. Isadora and I sat inside, watching the spectacle out of the windows. POP! Down a limb would come crashing, just missing our neighbor&#8217;s car. Luckily no serious damage was done, but now I can&#8217;t help but look at the massive oak tree in our front yard with trepidation. It seems criminal to chop down a tree that&#8217;s been around hundreds of years. How do you know when it&#8217;s time to say good-bye tree, hello chain saw? This slide show, <a href="http://www.ivillage.com/how-safe-are-your-aging-trees/7-b-383846"target="_ blank">How Safe Are Your Trees</a> at iVillage, offers some handy assessment ideas. Be on the lookout for warning signs like dead branches, splits in the trunk or even mushrooms growing out of the roots. &#8212; Angela M. </p>

<p>You may remember the national mourning that occurred a few years ago when <a href="http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml07/07096.html">Easy Bake Ovens were recalled</a>. Generations of passionate bakers wept when the news arrived that their very first oven &#8212; which baked small goodies with a really hot light bulb &#8212; was dangerous and being pulled off the shelf. Well, <a href="http://www.hasbrotoyshop.com/"target="_blank">Hasbro</a> has fixed the problems by replacing traditional lightbulbs with energy-effecient LEDs and compact fluorescents. Apparently the new version heats up to about 375 degrees, but the exterior of the oven remains warm &#8212; not hot &#8212; to the touch. It also got a little bit of a makeover. It&#8217;s sleeker and more purple than ever before. Hooray! Read more about the new design at <a href="http://www.ivillage.com/easy-bake-oven-new-makeover/3-a-384429"target="_blank">ivillage.com</a>. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://www.shelterrific.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/rice1.jpg" alt="rice1" title="rice1" width="443" height="344" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-25786" /></p>
<p>Nothing makes me happier than a dinner I can cook in one dish. So when I spotted a feature in the September Martha Stewart Living that showed a collection of skillet-based meals, I knew I would have to try one (or maybe all). This one, <a href="<a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/852119/baked-rice-chorizo-and-clams"target="_blank">baked rice with chorizo and clams</a> looks like an easy version of paella, but it also suggested an alternative with Italian sausage and broccoli rabe. As longtime readers of this blog know, I love just about anything with broccoli rabe, so this quickly got added to our weeknight menu. I am happy to report that the recipe was easy, the results were delicious and the clean up was a breeze. To make, you basically follow <a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/852119/baked-rice-chorizo-and-clams">this recipe</a> but replace the chorizo with Italian sausage, and the water with additional chicken stock. Instead of adding clams after cooking in the oven for ten minutes, add chopped broccoli rabe. I added a bit more wine than the recipe called for (1/2 cup instead of 1/14) because I found it cooked off quickly and I didn&#8217;t want it to be dry. </p>
<p>I was so pleased with the way this turned out, I am already brainstorming more things to cook this way &#8212; like a homemade version Hamburger Helper, perhaps? I will definitely try the Spanish chorizo one soon though. I love nothing more than a paella with a crusty rice bottom and I&#8217;ve always been to intimidated to try myself. This makes it seem easy and manageable. &#8212; Angela M.</p>

<p>Our cheap Ikea shag rug met its demise a few weeks ago (the tale is too sad to share, but lets just say it involved an incredibly sick kitty), and I am determined to replace it before the weather gets a chill a in the air. Perhaps it&#8217;s time for an upgrade and something a little different. Shag rugs seem so&#8230;. 2004. I&#8217;d love to find an alternative, but one that is still soft under the feet and relatively easy to clean up spills. There are a couple at West Elm I am eying (<a href="http://www.westelm.com/products/pebble-rug-r718/?pkey=ctufted-wool-rugs"target="_blank">the pebble rug</a> or <a href="http://www.westelm.com/products/sweater-rug-r717/?pkey=ctufted-wool-rugs"target="_blank">the sweater rug</a>) but I&#8217;d like to visit them in person before ordering. Why don&#8217;t catalogs offer rug swatches? Does anyone else have suggestions? Remember we have a toddler in the house and &#8212; shhhh &#8212; there&#8217;s talk of a puppy in our future. Thanks for your help! &#8212; Angela M.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-25592" title="gravel backyard" src="http://www.shelterrific.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/gravel-backyard1.jpg" alt="gravel backyard" width="443" height="295" /></p>
<p>The back yard at my house has always been a bit of a problem. Well, a disaster, really. It&#8217;s cloaked in full shade, and I have two dogs, which means that when the rainy season hits, we&#8217;re dealing with a (probably) malaria-ridden swamp pit for most of the winter. It also means I spent much, much, much too much time with my Swiffer, cleaning up all those muddy paw prints.</p>
<p>Finally, I&#8217;d had enough &#8211; and this summer, we decided to pave over it. Except that paving over a yard is expensive, and tricky. So, we went cheap and opted to install landscaping gravel instead. I was actually really nervous about how this would turn out, but after spotting <a href="http://www.sunset.com/garden/landscaping-design/easy-being-green-00400000019796/" target="_blank">these photos in <em>Sunset</em> Magazine</a>, I had to give it a try. I had visions of an awful urban jungle, devoid of color and personality, but the end result is so fantastic, I can&#8217;t believe we didn&#8217;t do it sooner. The whole project took one day, and was under $500 to complete (including labor!). The new yard is so incredibly liberating &#8211; no more mowing, seeding, digging around in piles of mud. And it&#8217;s much prettier than I imagined, even calming. The borders are edged with soil, so we can plant a few shade-friendly plants around the perimeter, and the rest is totally, 100% maintenance-free. I can hardly wait to throw an outdoor rug underneath my patio table (which can finally come out of storage), and have a little <a href="http://www.shelterrific.com/2011/08/26/dreaming-of-end-of-summer-barbecues/" target="_blank">end-of-summer barbecue</a> to celebrate! The only down side I can think of is that one of my dogs isn&#8217;t so crazy about walking on the gravel (you can see her scoping out the situation in that photo). But she&#8217;s coping, and my other dog loves being able to lay on the warm gravel in the sun&#8230;so I&#8217;m calling it a trade-off.</p>
<p>Have you ever considered eliminating the grass from your yard? &#8211;Becki S.</p>
