room porn: edinburgh’s tigerlily hotel

shelter_tigerlily1.jpg

Just returned from a destination wedding in Scotland! We stayed for two nights at Tigerlily, Edinburgh’s year-old designed-to-the-nines boutique hotel. We did our homework: The property won the Scottish Hotel Design Award and made Conde Nast Traveler’s Hot List this year. It takes up a Georgian Townhouse in the fashionable financial district, and sees a lot of to-and-fro due to its underground disco Lulu and main-floor lounge. Our suite (we were upgraded) was a mix of classic and couture—high notes included the turquoise floral flock textiles, a remote control rock fireplace facing our four-poster bed, and the giant white sculptural chandeliers. Only downside: You’re sleeping in the thick of a scene, but the walls are thick, too: We didn’t hear a thing. — Megan K.

blogwatch: got any new sites to share?

shelter_lafresh.jpg

We have had a hectic week, which cut our surfing time. But we wanted to share with you one new blog from a friend, Berit Thorkelson, that just launched called Trusty Pony. Berit is a travel writer who lives in West Saint Paul, MN and writes about her global journeys for many publications. Her new blog highlights amazingly clever travel-related products, like these assorted wipes by La Fresh. These pocket sized packets are just the ticket to clean you up while on the road, and best of all, no pesky airport security guard will attempt to take them away from you.

Now it’s your turn: Found any new sites we should know about? Perhaps you have launched one of your own! Let us know and we’ll feature it in an upcoming blogwatch.

shelter_teardrop.jpg

We spotted this shiny camper on style.com the other day and just had to blog it. It’s the Teardrop Trailer from the Sundance catalog, that appeals to our sense of wanderlust. It’s made from designs created in the 1940s, but has all kinds of modern-day conviences, including a Formica counter, a Sunbrella awning and a Coleman cooler. The mattress is full-sized, so two of you can hit the road, snug as bugs. This little number will set you back $24,000, but you’ll never have to crash in a Motel 8 again. This weekend was the inaugural opening of Philip Johnson’s famed Glass House to the public. Saturday’s lucky attendees got to enjoy a gourmet picnic, a private tour of the grounds and a performance by Merce Cunningham Dance Company. All tours of the New Canaan, CT house are SOLD OUT through 2007, so architect buffs, plan your trips for 2008 and book now online. For those of us incabable of planning that far ahead, we’ll have to be happy looking at all the photos emerging of the historic, minimalist dwelling, including this one which we cound over at apple.com.

paintbynumbersroomSeattle firecracker real estate agent Marlow Harris and her artist husband JoDavid take a look at the unusual ways people live around the world at their site Unusual Life. Marlow, in fact, specializes in helping locals find strange and unusual dream homes. The couple’s own house served as a church for many years and features their extensive collection of fine “outsider” art, and some not-so-fine but just as fun, like their entire room filled floor-to-ceiling with salvaged paint-by-numbers. - Mary T.

green getaway: check in to an earthship

A few years ago, during my first New Mexican road trip, we were driving down the long, flat road that leads into Taos when we spotted a group of odd little houses tucked in the valley. They looked like either Luke Skywalker or Bilbo Baggins was living there — funny little grass mounds with solar panels and undulating walls. We pulled into one that had a “visitor center” sign in front and learned that these unique buildings were Earthships, completely self-sustaining homes designed by architect Michael Reynolds. There’s a whole community of progressive folks living out there completely off-the-grid. Their homes are made of recycled materials like mud-packed tires and bottles, and each home generates its own power and collects its own water. Today, you can find earthships all around the world (the most recent project was in France) but for those of us just passing by, you can see how they work by renting one for the night. Chad and I stayed in The Studio $125 a night. It’s has a large room with a fireplace, plus a kitchen and full bath. The temperature inside is consistently pleasant and in the morning, as the sun rises, you can hear the houses mechanics click into gear. The location is a bit remote for us to imagine staying for long, but for one night of extreme green living and an amazing view, you can’t beat it. Click here to read more about Earthships. And go here to see about booking one for a night the next time you’re passing through Taos. — Angela M.

ideal to steal: faux fireplace sketch

shelter_fauxfireplace.jpg

There’s a funky little town halfway between Santa Fe and Albuquerque called Madrid (prounounced MAD-rid, not Ma-DRID) that is chock-a-block with quirky stores and galleries. The best is one called Rock Paper Gallery, where we spotted this clever take on a trompe d’oeil fireplace. It’s a simple pastel sketch of a firey heath, placed in a closed hearth. Easy enough to reproduce if you have a touch of drawing skills, or perhaps a talented friend. Keep an eye on the Rock Paper Gallery site — ecommerce will be coming in a couple of months!

testing out toto’s warming toilet seat

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

shelter_warmtoto.jpg

A few months ago, we wondered what could possibly make a toilet worth $5,000. Toto’s super-luxe Neorest 600 comes with a self washer, dryer and deodorizer. It all sounds a bit unnecessary, except for one feature which we had the fortune of testing out over the weekend: The Warmlet, a warming toilet seat. Our room at Santa Fe’s Ten Thousand Waves came equipped with one. We cranked it up towards high and got ready for some butt-cheek comfort. I know it sounds silly, but oh man, it is NICE! The funny thing is that each time I sat down on the thing I was pleasantly surprised. “Oh, it’s warm!” You can buy your own warming seat for $200 at Procomfort USA. — Angela M.

where are you this weekend?

shelter_tenthousand.jpg

You may have noticed that things were a little on the slow side here at Shelterrific this week. That’s because Chad and I have been on a road trip in the wild wild west (well… New Mexico). Tonight is our last night away, and we’re spending it at the fab Santa Fe spa Ten Thousand Waves. Above are a couple of shots of the Airstream you rent for a night there. We’re staying in a different room, but isn’t that cute! I’ll be sure to think of you all while I get my Thai massage and soak in the stars from our hot tub. Ahhhh… What are you up to this weekend? I’ll be back and rolling along soon, with lots to share. Happy Memorial Day! xoxox — Angela M.
