moveable type, literally: taking letterpress printing on the road

I was so excited to read today about a new venture being undertaken by Kyle Durrie of Power and Light Press, a letterhead company she runs in Portland, Oregon. Kyle has a plan to retrofit a bread truck with a portable printing press, then hit to the road to conduct letterpress workshops for kids across the U.S., sharing her love and building enthusisasm for the process. Kyle’s whole plan is outlined at the Moveable Type Kickstarter site, where she explains her quest in a fun and engaging video. You can donate funds (she’s only trying to raise $8,000 — that’s a very economical project) or just learn more about it. (Incidentally, Kickstarter, a site where you can “fund and follow creativity,” is pretty cool, too.) And make sure to visit the Power and Light Etsy shop, as well. — Mary T.

etsy find: steampunk computer

usb typewriter

Katie D. shared a steampunk laptop back in April, encased in a Victorian jewelry box. Here’s another take on it from Esty seller usbtypewriter. Each antique typewriter is modified to work as a USB keyboard for Macs, PCs and yes, iPads. My favorite is the bright green one, pictured, but there are other styles available or you can choose to have one of yours modified. Feeling handy? You’ll also find DIY kits in the seller’s store. — Sarah L.

By the looks of the White Mountain Office, plots to take over the world are hatched here daily. Worthy of uber evil James Bond villains, the offices are actually home to a Bahnhof AB data center (or at least that’s what they want us to think). The super lair was designed by Albert France Lanord Architects and is located 100 feet below the surface of Stockholm.  Not surprisingly, it was once used as an atomic bomb shelter and could withstand the resulting fallout. — Katie D.

office porn: into the woods with selgas cano architecture

There’s nothing I love more than looking at gorgeous offices and I recently stumbled on a doozy. There are no beige walls or stuffy conference rooms in the offices of Selgas Cano Architecture! Designed by Iwan Baan, the offices are entwined with nature thanks to the huge, sunny windows and the building’s position below ground level. Gazing out into the Spanish woods, I imagine that even the worst customer call would be blissful. –Katie D.
