want it now: wooden clock(s)

I am sick of digital clocks. The other day I realized that’s all we have in our house. By the bed, on the stove, on the cable box in the living room. I want a real clock, one with two arms that spin away the minutes and hours of the day. I’ve always loved vintage mid-century designs, like this George Nelson ball clock. But the other day, I spotted these beauties on nymag.com. They’re from neimanmarcus.com and are modestly priced ($135 to $295). Considering they do double-time as wall art, that’s a purchase I can almost justify. The trouble is I want all three. — Angela M.

yeah, I don’t know what it is about digital clocks, but I’ve never liked them. From the clocks on my walls to the watches I wear, I always go analog. Speaking of wood clocks, I just saw this neat one yesterday (on sale!)

I’ve wanted a nelson clock forever, but hate to drop $300 on one…

I’m not a big fan of digital clocks either. I have a plain cheap IKEA clock in the kitchen, a George Nelson ball clock in the living room (Christmas present from my very sweet husband who heard me say that I had always wanted one), and my bedside clock is a Big Ben repro of their midcentury “Moonbeam” clock. You can get them from LL Bean. I particularly like it because it flashes a light before the bell alarm goes off. It’s much more gentle and pleasant to wake to a flashing light, but if it doesn’t wake you, then the bell goes off. The only problem is that the dial is lighted, and it’s so bright it keeps me up at night, so I keep a denim napkin on top. Yes, I know, weird, but I like the flashing light, and I still wake even with the napkin on top.
